You don't have to upgrade if you don't want to... There won't be any nag from your distro maintainer like you have on windows telling you that you must upgrade. Hell my brother is still running Mint 12 on his PC since everything works...
As for Qt longevity, it is crossplatform and used quite heavily in both the desktop and mobile market and is heavily being developed/maintained. I have less fear about Qt than I have about Gnome...
