What does he now ? Having bunch of _unproven_ teories does not qualify one as an expert. Sun, IBM, Microsoft dev managers are the experts they actually overseen creation of real software that's being used all over the world.
ERS is no expert at anything ( with possible exception of guns )
His post was quite offensive but , basically, he is right. FSF != Open Source and many ( if not most) folks simply like to have source code because it helps to solve problems without supporting yet another utopian social couse some lunatic managed to come up. RMS has no real world experience being shielded for most of his life by goverment funding in his University... Beside his coding skills he has nothig to offer us.
O yeah it is pain.. so is going to work every morning. What's your solution for that ? Why should we share music and not, say cars ? Why not introduce law stating that everybody has to have a car.. and a house and, hell, whatever they want. If stuff has no value (free) people have no incentive to produce it. Simple like that. Look at the communism. People did not own stuff so they didn't give a fuck about it.

If this goes to court and GPL is upheld watch commecial world specifically banning all GPL software in the corporate world. I bet some of them will even specificly prohibit running GPL binaries let alone looking at the source code...
You are absolutely correct but you know what ? It is social strugle for them and has nothing to do with freedom. Or rather, it has everything to do with freedom as understood by RMS and we know what happens when people start f***g around with meaning of the word freedom.
Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. You are right, in principle highly interactive programs could be done using cooperative multitasking but in reality, even these require some sort of background processing ( reformating a page, ocassional search etc..) which, when not done properly, highlights shortcomming of this approach. Additionally, this introduces another (unnecesary) level of complications when one has to scan the code for any potentially lenghty loops and make sure that event loop is being called. In other words, the logic of your algoritm has to be polluted with tasks that are not related to issue at hand.
Running out of gas? You know, the way free enterprise works, somebody somewhere will come up with new way of powering our vehicles. Business is not your enemy. Scare mongers like Al Gore are.
There are other issues here like for example forcing companies to produce many different version of gasoline for different markets. While this might not be the case here, enviroment-mania is running rampart in this country.
O yes there is way to do that in Linux. In fact, it is very simple. Compile xpm file (which is a C construct) into your executable, tell Window Manager about this xpm and you are done. As a user you can't , however, "retrieve" and switch that icon the way you can do on Windows box.
"While PC users (myself included) have been sucked into the complete hardware / software upgrade every 2.5 years cycle, the core constituency of Mac users hasn't - and asking them to change everything just wouldn't work. "
That dosn't sound like there is much of a future for Apple does it ? Their user base is mostly stable, meaning people who buy macs are ones who have worked with Macs for years. Either your assumption is wrong or... Apple is in big trouble.
On NT you get your focus back.Don't know about Apple.
And what being able to run KDE apps in Gnome has to do with anything. One can easily run Photoshop along with Word and vice versa with no problem either.
I don't. But most people here seem to expect way more.
Yeah. I do.
Sure beats living in the GPL world ..
ESR can't show anything beside bunch of inflated IPO based, so called "companies."
Back to reality people.

What the fuck is with that "we" ?? THere is no "we" just FSF and the rest of the world.
It says here "News for Nerds" not "News for GPL Nerds".
As we can see they never fail ..

GPL culture created Internet ?
Are you on crack ?
If this goes to court and GPL is upheld watch commecial world specifically banning all GPL software in the corporate world. I bet some of them will even specificly prohibit running GPL binaries let alone looking at the source code ...
I know quite a few people who thing GPL is dangerous thing. I doubt they would rejoyce. ...
So there is now "we" here

It sold so well because it was cheap. Good enough and cheap. On a larger scale, nothing beats that.
It was bound to happen. Somebody managed, after all, to blame Bill even for this.
Running out of gas? You know, the way free enterprise works, somebody somewhere will come up with new way of powering our vehicles.

No, it is *overpriced* over there. Just like about everything else.

That would solve lots of problems , indeed.
Good idea !
That's actually quite significant. To bad it happen to be worst president in this century getting to do this for the first time.
