Agreed -- as long as it's not an afterthought, we have to ensure that we only hire people that we really need.

Just 5 minutes ago I received an email telling me that after review of the information I provided I now have approval to convert 2 of the contractor positions into full time positions. And here I thought I was about be asked to get rid of my contracting positions....

I find the same thing anytime I look for new developers. Right now in my company we have a hiring freeze through year end. We're also cutting costs wherever we can, bracing ourselves for the worst. I think a lot of companies are doing this which probably ends up making things worse.

What's a bit different than anything I've gone through is that I had to go through every position on my department and explain what they do and why we need that person.

Large memory requirements -- that's what I find my Grails apps have after deploying to my VPS (Virtual Private Server). I had to immediately upgrade plans after deployment. It left me wondering whether I made the right choice in choosing Grails to develop my apps in.

Django is now under consideration. It's still very early and I can certainly rewrite what I have so far; I'm just doing my homework first to see if it's worth it.

Don't get me wrong, development with Grails and Groovy is awesome, there's lots to like there. I just have to make sure it's the right thing for me considering what I'm finding after my initial deployment.

Very true, it's a very good thing to learn a new language -- as long as you put in the time to get past that superficial "I created a Hello World program so I can put this language on my resume now".

Sounds like the goal is to get hired as a Java developer. As a web development manager that has a mostly Java staff, I can tell you that it's not easy to find good Java developers. Not awesome but simply good. When I interview Java developers it's amazing how many of them do well in written multiple choice tests but fail miserably when asked to actually write a simple program or write down what their object hierarchy for X program would be like.

  5. There goes that Vegas trip on Vegas Star Trek Experience Closing Down · · Score: 1

I used to go to Vegas all the time when I lived in California (10+ years ago) and have been wanting to go visit lately to see how it's changed. My wife would go though she has mentioned she wouldn't be thrilled with going there since it doesn't seem like her type of place.

A couple of months ago she found an article somewhere that mentioned this Star Trek attraction and she started saying she wanted to go to Vegas to check it out!

    Now this.

Just when I thought I caught a break. I'm sure she'll go but she probably won't enjoy it as much now.

Ah yeah, that's pretty annoying though it hasn't happened to me in a long time. Used to happen often with Safari on OS X (a lot more than Firefox). Isn't Opera multi-threaded? Not sure about that.

I'd be more interested in a better mobile browser to be honest. Though Google's WebKit based Android browser shows some promise it could be better. IE mobile sucks and I don't like Opera mini.

  7. Opera, Safari, Chrome? on Google Chrome, the Google Browser · · Score: 1

We do have a lot of great choices out there as far as browsers are concerned, it will be interesting to see if Google's browser really brings anything new to the table. Opera and Safari (and many others) have really failed to gain market penetration. Firefox has really been the only browser to pose a significant threat to IE. Should be interesting to see what they come up with.
