The dirty hippies I know are more concerned with the declining expectation modern people have of environmental quality.
People sitting at their keyboards all day don't tend to see how seas with no fish and forests with no frogs is becoming an accepted norm. It's not about global warming, it is about finding a cause with enough science behind it to get people to start comparing their grandparents natural experience with their own.
It's also about doing something exciting and new. every generation wants to do that and solar panels and wind turbines are way more exciting than billowing smoke stacks.
