ok - this is unrelated to the thread under discussion, but you can blame my relative infrequence posting to slashdot... in particular i read at mod +4 and couldnt find abortion mentioned, so i did a search and this was one of the 10 or so posts that came up...
the question is:
what is your position on abortion?
simple enough, but if the candidate actually decides to answer with more than a for/against - we could ask for clarification... in particular, (if you have never needed an abortion, be thankful - but this is from my own experience) how do you protect the PRIVACY of the person requesting the abortion?
privacy is always a hot-topic among/.-ers (myself included), but it comes up CRITICALLY when dealing with subjects that are contested politically. most "revolutions" start with semi-private communications that eventually become spearheaded to non-anonymity. if we are going to have anything more than our current 2-party system, then we need a "revolution" in politics. many of the people posting to/. do so as "Anonymous Coward" - and i'm sure many of those ACs would like to know your stance on abortion...
as you can see from my sig - i think of myself as an AC!:)

This is true! (and couldve used some more up-moderation) Such a shame, when I miss a "hot" story one day when I am not at my computer. Anyways - I DO have a Compaq, and their recovery CD - and I WAS able to replace/repartition the HDD to dual-boot Linux (RH5.2, awhile ago). My comment is - this may not be as "horrible" as it sounds. Yes, it will allow more "lemons" (and then laws will eventually get passed by real people forcing the votes) - but a "good" company will still be able to do business effectively. Would I buy another Compaq? I don't know, but this scenario is not as "terrible" as it sounds. Would I "sign up" for the ability to affect my representatives' votes on this issue? Yes. Do I already vote? Yes. Since this article is dead (one day old, already) I'll stop here, but I just wanted to say - DITTO (to the title)!:)
Well, this is good to hear. To be honest, I hadn't even gotten around to clicking the link to see what the story actually was because I was soo interested in the topic and responses. I saw, in a different thread that APPLE should not be pursuing this since cassette cases have been translucent for awhile. Well, I used to own a Radio Shack TRS-80 that had been packaged in a translucent computer case back in 1981 or so. I have long since thrown the thing out because the latest "gizmo" that it had was STEREO cassette recording for your BASIC programs. The technology has come a long way since the early 80s yet translucent cases is not something new. Of course, if APPLE had actually went and gotten a patent on the idea - and the patent office didn't know about the "prior art" or whatever legal-mumbo-jumbo is affecting this story, then all bets are off. Just thought that someone would appreciate knowing that good old Tandy had translucent cases "way back when" and it was cool.
The obvious thing that I took from all the mumbo-jumbo about chemicals was: No_Sleep increases verbal skills and decreases math skills. Ok, when are most humans subjected to No_Sleep? When they have babies. What are you doing with a baby? Trying to feed it... based on its screams and so you are learning a minimal language. Natural selection rules seem to apply here.
This also makes sense from the "parents understand their childrens language"-perspective because by the time that the child is old enough to form words, then the parent gets more sleep and the memory starts kicking back in.

at the risk of becoming katz-y: teens (or those who act immature) DO seem to comprise the bulk of flamers. my opinion - so what? there are plenty of times when a little immaturity is often the correct medicine. as others have stated - if you can't hold your opinion when it is challenged, then why bother having it? a nonzero fraction of flamers may become mature enough to realize that their comments are hostile (or insert your _bad_ adjective here) and thus should be restrained. my opinion - that's good, but so what? the maturity of any individual in a society will (due to lowest-common-denominator) only truly be represented in that society when that society decides what lcd they will accept. there is a reason that 13yo males do not drive cars and vote in america - we decided that they are not mature enough yet. [ooohhhh - an opinion, here comes the flame...] this j.katz article sucks. yes, it is petty, but that is my opinion - note, i am mature enough to realize that the person may not suck, but this article certainly did. the reasons have already been brought up in other threads - he is pedantic, long-winded, and pointless within a society [/.] that tends to mainly care about quick wits and interesting information. since this response is fairly late, I doubt many others will ever see it - and besides, we already know that katz must have an inside track to/. so his articles will keep appearing. I'm not sure I am ready to completely 'zotz' him from my preferences, but maybe I'll go check out the hellmouth articles (which someone else actually DID recommend) to see... oh yeah, you may wonder why I am posting in this thread rather than starting my own? well, it was near the end of my _read_ and it had a fairly mature content. I may not be mature, but I like to associate with those who are...
In many cases, fighting the symptoms is good enough - in this case I am not so sure... I was originally going to post that there is really not much crime of this sort that affects me even tho I use the internet daily and for work. OTOH, the example in the article - stealing CC#s for ransom - and my personal experience of having my # illegally used once are real problems. My question becomes - what is the cause vs. what is the symptom? The symptom is theft - so address it. The cause is probably unique-enough for each theif to not warrant being addressed with blanket policy. Other symptoms of computer crime also exist - and the means she used to address it seem reasonable. Namely, create a community of people that care about the problems so that they can find ways of dealing with them. Even if _I_ don't want to be a policeman doesn't mean that I don't appreciate those who do.
