Interesting Brookings Institute forum on Global Trade. Some talking heads are finally saying what we've been saying around the water cooler for years. Funny how these educated economists have been slow on the uptake.

Interesting quote from Paul Craig Roberts:

"When I talk to them, they know more about it than any of my economists friends, no matter how distinguished they are. And the reason they know more about it is they spend a great deal of time searching for an occupation that can't be wiped out underneath them. And they are having great difficulty in finding one."

  2. Re:what exists on VCD that makes you want it? on What's The Best Combo DVD/VCD/CD/MP3 Player? · · Score: 1
I haven't yet tried a VCD in my player (a Toshiba), but I finally got a new computer with the speed and video quality for capturing movies from the camcorder.

Until we have a resonably priced recordable DVD standard (they way CD burners are affordable now) that plays in most DVD players, I think VCD would be useful for a digital (granted poor quality) backup for the home movies. If that 8MM tape gets whacked, at least you will have the memories of the wedding, kids soccer games, or whatever backed up on something.

Of course, that much money (just the money they're paying to take care of uncertain licenses) could probably also buy CD burners and enough blanks to create no-license-hassles copies of Linux or Free / Open / NetBSD for every computer the city owns.

Of course, that much money wouldn't come near paying the annual salaries for the army of tech support people they would need to add to the staff try to keep Linux/Unix running on the city's desktops.

These OS's are NOT free...the software itself just doesn't cost anything. You can slam MS products all you want, and they aren't perfect, but they do the job with lower total cost of ownership.

Yes, I found it quite intriguing that no one has mentioned NT4's good performance compared to Win2k. Feature creep continues...bloatware expands.

  5. Paperless Bathroom? on Are Printed Manuals Dead? · · Score: 2

It depends on the software, but I know it is nice to have bathroom library material for stuff you may not want to devote other real reading time to, but do want to pick up on eventually. I mean, hey the bathroom is a great place to brush up on windows API calls you may have used only sparsely before. Come to think of it, java or C++ library documentation would make good bathroom reading material too... Forvalaka
