I'm one of those people you mention who read everything and almost never post, but I feel compelled now because I want to tell you you are one of the reasons I visit/. If it wasn't for the discussions you initiate, on ethics, capitalism, the role of tech in society, spirituality, and my favorite subject of all, intellectual property, this site would not be as interesting. Yeah, the tech discussions are great, and I often learn stuff I would've never learned in school, but ultimately it's the discussions on ideology and culture, and the widespread participation, that make this site different.
I must admit though, all the posts breaking on you for being a non tech guy turned me off to your ideas.....I don't respect people who perp (try to be something they're not), and I expected other engineers and tech people to populate the site. But the interview enlightened me to who you really are. Trust me, I identify. Not to sweat you, but thank you Jon.
I love the way everyone here goes off on what they feel is the meaning of life, as if 16 years as a snot nose kid is going to teach you anything anyway. I certainly don't claim to have any answers, but humility is in order. Live a little before you suddenly proclaim you know the TRUTH. I don't mind though, life has a way of teaching you about your arrogance and vanity.
Ask people who've faced death (like war veterans) or really old people and they'll tell you, "forget about searching for truth, just be happy you're alive." It's interesting how in our own myopia, we've lost the reason why we're here--trusting the religion we call "science" to deliver "truth."
Almost all the discussion here narrowly centers around western conceptions of philosophy, religion, and science--open your MINDS people!!! Everyone claims to be so open minded, yet you become obsessed with the fingers pointing at the moon--FORGET ABOUT SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY, RELIGION, RACE, LANGUAGE and the TRUTH will be self evident.
It boils down to EXPERIENCE. The point of Buddhism, Zen, and Taoism of to divest yourself from the constraints of "thought", "self", and separations, and experience the WHOLE thing, the way quantum physics proves it works--an endless ocean of energt, turning on/off--vibrating constantly.
So stop THINKING SO DAMN MUCH, you bunch of lifeless geeks, and LIVE IT UP....trust me, you'll be happier.

I GIVE UP!!! who cares if a zillion marketers have hundreds of my profiles and target me to death....NOW THE BABY BELLS ARE BRANDING THEMSELVES THROUGH PHONE LINES, WANNA TALK ABOUT ANNOYING!!! yet, all these organizations know **NOTHING** about **ME**, the actual person, and guess what, tommorow i'll want a different kinda soap, or i'll stop using soap all together, and they'll *still* be trying to sell me soap. the point is, *YOU* ARE NOT ONLY YOUR *NAME*, or your habits, OR EVEN YOUR *BODIES*.....*we* are a lot more than that. i feel like TOBY in roots, YOU CAN ENSLAVE MY BODY, BUT YOU CAN NEVER ENSLAVE ME!!! SO to the marketers: TAKE MY FUCKIN PROFILES AND SHOVE THEM UP YOUR AHOLES YOU GREEDY FUCKS. All this helps me sleep at night.

Does anybody make any non-tech assosciations? It can't be this obvious right? I mean, while everyone's talking why not bsd, how this is good or bad, contracts, business, bla bla bla........IS EVERYONE BLIND OR SOMETHING....or maybe it's just so obvious, that there's no way it could be......but i can ***guarantee*** that in the event of a real national security threat (like china bombing taiwan--as oppossed to ouzama bin laden), the NSA **will** be in charge.......the NSA is the guarantor of the US's existence. Whether conspiratorial or not, the effect is the same. These people live to destroy any real or perceived threat to national security, even if that threat takes the shape of a global community of programmers. This is about control, and both China and the NSA are steering in their own directions.
