  2. Ironic on On to Mars · · Score: 1

It's a little ironic that you compared the Mars Lander to Waterworld, that highly aclaimed and not at all peice of tripe (Ha Ha). Waterworld in all fairness wasn't that bad a movie, but it did crash and burn. We can only assume that the mars lander crashed and burned as well. Maybe next time NASA will hire Costner to direct the launch. Ok the cost would tripple and it would be at least 2 hours longer than expected, but it would go out in style.

  3. About Time on Hubble Space Telescope Back and Better Than Ever · · Score: 1

This is one of the most worth while ventures that Humanity has undertaken. We have learn't more about Distant space in it's brief time in operation than in the entire time that the human race has been "watching the Stars".

The pictures that Huble has been providing has greatly interested me for years, and It excites me greatly to have at least another few years to get magnifisent pictures from the depths of space,

Well done this time NASA, for something that this time works properly (Dispite it's many glitches)

  4. Query on Cell phones used to track traffic · · Score: 1

Do the Perople who's cell phones are being tracked have to be useing them? By my understand, it is illegal to use a mobile phone whilt moving (At least it is in britian), so surely this should raise questions to this leglistation. I do understand that some people use "hands free" kits and also the phones could be being used by the passengers so these things need to be taken into account. My final point is also, how will they be able to distinguish between people walking, on skates, cycling, on trains and on busses, It seems to me that there are too many variables for this to be taken too seriously!

  5. Just another craze on Hoberman Sphere Building Blocks · · Score: 1

I used to work in The Gadjet Shop in Leeds, UK during the christmas of 1997. In that shop we sold a whole range of wierd and wonderfull stuff. One of those things that we sold however was the Hoberman Sphere. It was a jumble of plastic construction that expanded from about 10 inches in diameter, to over a meter and a half in diameter. The holes in the structure were easily big enough to put your head in, and I remember 1 member of staff being able to ware it! It was priced at $78.74 equivalent and had no apparent use.

We had customers coming too us on a regular basis to ask us what it was, and having no documentation either with it, or provided by head office we basically didn't have a clue.

However, one evening I was trawling the internet search engines that I finially found out exactly what the Hoberman Sphere actually was designed for (mobile constuction purpouses for quick deplovment, i.e. A Marquee with a solid structure that could be brought in and deployed from the back of a lorry and removed just as easily)

My point is, what is the point in yet another useless craze, for a product that has no use whatsoever in short term efects. Is it me or is the whole world gone crazy. At least lego and Yoyo's have use, but I personally think that it's all going crazy!

  6. Re:About time to abandon the Red Planet on Giving Up on Mars Polar Lander · · Score: 1

Once again (I must admit) I do agree with your point, however bringing up the possibility of ARPA close doors on the internet is possibly not one of the best ways to look at it.

Some of the university's in America have recently got together to discus the capability of the internet. It was felt ( as it generally is by a large amount of people) that the internet is quickly filling up with too mush rubbish (as the article said, mainly the porn). They felt that the only way for them to sort it out was to create yet again a new system. It is still called Internet2 (as far as I am aware).

That article was taken from the daily express published towards the end of last year.

The main problem that I was introducing with my comment was not that it is completely frivalous, but that much more planning has to be taken into acount, as with the venus probes which were a great success.

Not only that you also say that we still don't know everything about our own plannet. Sure as you pointed out it is early days in space exploration (40 years I belive) when we have been exploring our own plannet for around 5000 years. I know that you can't look back through the pages of history and think that one page is equivalent to another. We do need to keep exploring space and finding out as much as we can, to evolve, but maybe at a slightly slower and more thought out pace.

We have now lost a total of 3 probes around mars
Is it now time to re-think?

  7. About time to abandon the Red Planet on Giving Up on Mars Polar Lander · · Score: 3

With the current success rate, I feal that it is about time that N.A.S.A gave up on the project. The reason for no contact could be one of many things. It wouldn't however be fair to blame anyone because I very much doubt that they will either regain contact or find out what went wrong. Although the shear amount of the costs involved must come into the equation sometime.\

I might however think back to the Venus Probes that were sent back in the 70's (I think). They were so well tested that if any problems would arise they should have all ready been thought of. From the Immence heat shielding surrounding the probe, to the high impact design that ment theat nothing went wrong and we learnt much about another planet in this uncomprehensibly small section of space.

  9. What About The Shares on Gates Steps Down As CEO, Ballmer In · · Score: 1

By my understanding of buisness, whoever has the share controls the company. Shure Balmer is in charge of the day to day running of the company, but at the end of the day he cannot do anything without the backing of the share holders. It appears to me that Bill Gates is purely doing this to effectively become a scilent partner that still has most of the power.

Or is it the question of the Dos stealing argument. I remember reading that Windows 2000 is doing away with dos, the origional program which Gates remarcably stole (sorry, lost the site I got the info off) years back. Now that he has done away with it maybe it's time for a proper software engineer to step in and take up the callenge.

Personally I'm hoping that Linex takes advantage of the company whilst It's resufelling. Then we'll see a real operating system

  10. Neo is the One on The Matrix Movie Now in a College Course · · Score: 1

What is the education system coming too now a days. Mickey Mouse Degrees are spawning everywhere. Is it really relavent and does it actually have a point? We Used to live in a sociaty where having a degree almost certainly gare rise to a job in the same subject. Now a days however it seems that there a university subject is almost any fields, some I even hate to think of. Although I greatly liked the film and am avidly waiting for the sequal which is out shortly I believe, It still has to be thought that the effects were not knew and nothing about the film really made that much sence. Even the thought of it happening in real life is a mighty bit strange. But even that is so far into the future that There is no point in even worying about it, or even think about it. I think that I should have been left at a Sci-fi Movie that was good and nothing else, and leave the science of it to the person that wrote it, probably for a bit of cash.
