I thought it was pretty obvious that they were supposed to be writing in java (the.java extensions on the source files). Of course the selection of java for a time critical piece of code is bewildering, but being that java is "cooler" to say then C or assembler I can understand it from a movie standpoint.
As to the CD burner's speed, it doesn't have to be that fast when you are just burning a compiled (into bytecode at the least) program. The finished product would probably be less than 10MB or so.
