    The new TLDs could be set up so that NSI doesn't run them and thus doesn't bungle them up and doesn't get any money from them.

    I think a TLD for personal sites might be nice, but other than that I can't think of any interesting TLDs.

    RealServer does no encoding, so it won't help the cause of getting Sorenson on Linux.

    I doubt that more people will be buying RealServer. Consider that RealServer costs you per stream, but the NetShow and QuickTime servers are free.

    For example, if someone figured out that this pre-production chip was only running at a measly 1GHz, the next day there'd be a huge story on news.com about how the chip was "below expectations" or some other BS.

    Either Transmeta chip will run whatever OS you put on it.

    However, this pad can't be running Windows Me, because it doesn't have a disk. So that leaves Linux, BeIA, or QNX.

    There's a big difference between the ~40 Mbps DV codec and the ~4 Mbps MPEG-2 codec that the MD Discam is using.

    AFAIK, only the kernel in the TiVo is Open Source; the rest is proprietary so I doubt you could add any features to it.

    Linux can serve streaming media just fine AFAIK, but it still can't capture, author, or play it as well as some other systems.

    So does that make Linux a "media OS" or not? I don't really care about the labels, just what it can do.

    AFAIK, Dell has been offering systems with 866 MHz PIII Xeons for a few months now. I don't see why a "new" 700 MHz CPU is interesting when the "old" ones are 866 MHz.

    The whole point of a smart card (which is what this is -- just fancier) is that the private key never leaves the card. It doesn't matter if you know how it works, because it doesn't rely on security-through-obscurity.

    Losing a private signing key isn't the end of the world; you can just revoke it and generate another one.

    Then you totally missed the point of the post you replied to. Legal rights are not necessarily moral rights. So morally, copying is not equivalent to theft.

    Companies like MS and Real don't want to admit to using a file format designed by their competitor Apple, so they invented their own file formats.

    MPEG is developed by ISO; that means you have to pay for the specs and can't give copies to your neighbors, but it isn't viral, so you can at least own the code you write.

    MPEG-4 is covered by so many patents that a licensing association has been set up to keep track of the whole thing. If you want to sell something that uses MPEG-4, just give them your wallet and back away slowly. :-)

    This appears to be the original, geekier version of the story before TechWeb's editors got to it. I'm not sure I like the idea of inserting personalized advertising objects into video streams.

    We already have 200 channels with MPEG-2; how many do they want to give us with MPEG-4?

    Voice-over-IP isn't a "service" any more than the Web is. The phones connect directly to each other (or to a gateway); nothing goes through any central Cisco server, so there's no way they could charge you for usage. Besides, there are several companies making IP phones, so competition should drive the price down.

    The standard is called H.323; you can get an Open Source, patent-free implementation from the OpenH323 project.

    At the upcoming Macworld|Seybold|WWDC, Apple will announce:

    new Powerbooks (or not)
    new 17" iMacs (or not)
    MP PowerMacs (or not)
    an Apple PDA (or not)
    MacOS X is shipping (or not)

    In other words, these guys predict anything that could possibly happen, so some of it is bound be true.

    I this this would be useful, too, but I don't see many people working on Gtk+ or Qt lookalike PLAFs for Swing. A notable exception is the Skin Look & Feel, but it doesn't seem to be progressing very quickly.

    This whole debate has been gone over again and again. If you want your components implemented in native code and hardware accelerated, use AWT. If you want really flexible components that look pixel-identical on every platform and have all kinds of cool features that your graphics card can't accelerate, use Swing.

    And what's wrong with Sun making a fast VM for Solaris? There's nothing stopping you from joining the Blackdown project and doing the same for Linux.

    I disagree. There are several free Web services that I don't use now because they have ads and I don't want my data stored on someone else's server. I'd love to be able to download such an app and run it on my own computer.

    The whole point behind QNX's message passing (like EROS and Sun's doors but unlike Mach) is that it is synchronous. This is an important difference, as the kernel doesn't have to buffer synchronous messages and thus only has to copy each message once instead of twice.

    QNX also supports queued realtime signals (as does Linux), but because queued signals are unreliable, that's not how most messages are passed.

    The Total Impact boards are SBCs; they just happen to plug into a host machine. Thus if you put 3 of those cards in a Power Mac, you do not have a 13-processor Mac; you have a 13-processor cluster made of 4 separate machines. (Anyone remember the Radius Rocket?)

    Some apps love clusters, but most apps don't get any benefit.
