  1. 10 Digit Dialing on FCC Considering 10-Digit Dialing [UPDATED] · · Score: 1

As a veteran of the West LA 10 Digit wars, I can attest that this is a non-trivial problem. Some things to consider: 1) People have trouble memorizing long strings of digits. The most commonly held buffer size is 7+/-2. Near as I can tell, 10 is bigger than that. 2) Necessity: Here in So.Cal. it turned out that there wasn't actually a shortage...the phone companies were just reserving blocks of number in increments of 10k, and didn't want to release them. Once the Public Utilities Commission smacked 'em on the wrist and made 'em release number in blocks of 1k, the problem went away. Just my 2 pennies...

  2. You Can't Keep A Good Story Down. on Dune Scores Huge Ratings · · Score: 1

Let me start by saying that, while not a fanatic, I did like Dune, both the book and the movie. And I like the SciFi Channel version as well -- in spite of itself. Anybody else notice that the Muad'ib looked suspiciously like a big, grey-eared Pikachu? And apparently drinking the converted water of life turns you into a Solid Gold dancer. Ick. Much scene chewing, poor sets, hideously delivered dialogue...still a great story. My $.02 doesn't buy as much as it used to.

  3. Heifer Project International on Geek Charities? · · Score: 1

http://www.heifer.org/ Not very geeky, until you consider the viral nature of the concept. Give underpriveleged people a self-replicating source of both food and income (everything from rabbits to chickens to llamas), training in the care of the animals, and a promise to pass along the offspring to others in the community (just how do you enclose a water buffalo as an Outlook attachment?...) Cool concept, even if I don't usually give to religious charities, this one just made so much sense...
