Ye Gads! It took this long to find a reference to LaForge. Ah well. So how long before this guy an detect infared light, increases in tacheon emmissions, and microfractures in a freighter's hull? It's impresive work but I agree, the 1978 hardware sure could stand an upgrade. I'm sure they'll work that out for their next subject. A human brain isn't quite a good ol' ZIF socket, is it?
I'm all for the security aspect as well. One issue you should keep in mind is the export restrictions placed on many types of security measures. It seems to me that you'd like to keep your software available to all types of users, world-wide.
