But the brute forcer also has to try all sorts of stupid variations:
An 8 character password using ASCII printable characters only has 5,595,818,096,650,401 possibilities. I'm guessing less than that number of songs have been written... even with variations in lyrics. Even with a thousand variations per song, and a trillion songs to seed the password cracker... you're still looking at a few minutes, perhaps an hour, to crack your password. Your keyspace is pathetically small.
You apparently haven't seen some of the Supreme Court's latest rulings. Basically, they're using the Constitution as high-grade toilet paper. You can thank Bush for that. "Can the United States torture people with 6 feet of iron wrought fencing, heated, and no lube, because someone pitched a tent in a public place? Yes."
This is not unique to men in any way; if you walk into the office wearing only briefs and well tanned skin, with good muscles under it, you will catch quite a few looks from womenfolk - even if you wish that they don't look at you.
that's why we look at them out of the corner of our eyes, and only when they're distracted and not looking in our direction.:) There is such a thing as being discreet...
Hey now, stop that you tease. I already know you're gay. Nice outfit, though.
Please. I've spent the afternoon screwing around with DirectX system calls... I'm wearing a pair of sweatpants, a tank, and my hair is tied off in a pony. And I spilled lunch down my front about an hour ago. Stupid mutter mutter... My cleveage is only good for catching boiling things you just fished out of the kitchen, and being nice pillows for when I sprawl out on the bed and read a book.
I think the real story here is that the federal government has become so corrupt and has debased our rights under the US Constitution that we're now having to use state constitutions to defend our freedoms. Many convictions have been upheld by the US Supreme Court for expressing discontent with the US government. It appears the last bastion of hope now lies with the states. I wonder how long before the first state withdraws from the Union, and a new civil war begins.
OK, so women don't want men to think about, talk about, look at, or otherwise interact with boobs, is that the case?
Some women. There are very few statements I can think of that apply to all women, anymore than I can come up with any to describe all men. Both are social identities and nothing else. That said, if I had to say something on behalf of the simply majority of women would agree with, it'd be this:
We understand you think about sex. We do too. Kindof a lot, actually. But there's a time and a place for thinking about (or talking about) sex, and a time and a place not to. As women, we're expected to take on a wide variety of social roles. As a man, many of you enjoy the privilege of only having to take on one: Being a man. All we're asking, if we're asking for anything at all, is that you develop a little flexibility. There's a time for being a professional man, and a time for being a sexually aroused man. And most of us women, while yes, we do sometimes dress sexy at work, that's not a comeon for you at work. That's a meet me after work proposition. As in, when the work is done, and the boss isn't around.
It's all about context, and men... well, men are terrible with context.
So an argument could be made that, on average, women's boobs are statistically larger due to statistics.
I beg to differ. Most women 'obtain' big boobs believing they will attract a better mate. But surveys have been constantly reporting that the ideal breast size is 'C' in terms of aesthetic appeal. Women who get larger breasts than that are appealing to a smaller subset of mates, and there's no correlation between a man's reproductive success and his only mating with women of unusual breast size.
I'd argue even that the reverse is true, since as far as I can tell, overly-large breasts make men stupid, which is not an evolutionarily advantageous trait...
*dons asbestos flame retardant clothing* Well, the Apple fanboys are gonna hate this... I'll be impressed if my reply last 5 minutes before getting modded into oblivion... but the truth is, you're going easy on them.
Don't forget their solution to suiciding workers due to poor working conditions was to install netting outside the buildings... and only started to address poor working conditions at the FoxConn plant after Jon Stewart and a host of other journalists named and shamed their practices. And those poor working conditions included... vats of boiling acid. I'm not shitting you; That's how you etch circuit boards, and they had the most lax safety standards of any factory the independent observers sent in had ever seen. I don't know if anyone actually fell in or anything, but parts of the FoxConn factory resembled James Bond sets. I half expected to see shark tanks and lasers. And this is China we're talking about -- a country that's strip-mining its own resources for exportation in electronics. Bejing, where the factory is, has smog so thick that it can and has killed people who didn't heed the air quality sirens. It's like the smog you see in the opening scenes for the Fifth Element.
Apple isn't green to begin with, and when you look at their business partners, the picture gets even more bleak. But then, what would you expect from a company with the largest market capitalization of any country in the world, and has the largest cash reserves?
You can't be serious, but I guess history does repeat itself. Do you not remember what happened the last time someone let large swaths of Ego-fed rationalist algae mix with flamebait and propaganda? GRAMMAR NAZIS!!
Apparently you didn't read the congressional report on that incident because you only watch Fox News. The G.N. Crisis of 1998 was caused by an influx of AOLers onto the network that happened at the same time as a naturally occurring rationalist algae bloom was happening. The panel concluded that grammar nazis were the result of an invasive species of Stoopid being loosed into a predominantly academic-dominated area, where they multiplied and overran the Forum environment. That's why we had to bring their natural predator, Trololol, and release it into the forums. Jeez... before you bitch about history, brush up on it why don'tcha.
Tell me, while you're focusing so hard on your Sarcasm levels, what monitors do you have to prevent Ego leaks? None! The signs of Ego blowouts are everywhere around your refineries, and yet you do nothing. You disgust me.
There's no scientific proof of a negative long-term impact of Ego on the environment. In fact, studies have shown just the opposite; large blooms of rationalist algae were created shortly after Ego leaks which ate most of it. The remainder was broken down by natural processes into harmless conspiracy theories and propaganda. AC power is an untapped and vastly renewable energy source, which is readily sustainable by simply planting flamebait after the fundamentalism has been extracted. And I never said we'd have to stick with it forever; Eventually we'll figure out how to fuse conservativism and liberalism... but that technology is at least 30 years away. Until then, forums being run on AC is our only viable alternative.
The brogressive conservative mindset is pervasive on slashdot. You're taking the position of the "voice of reason" in a sea of idiocy, when you're actually just preaching to the choir... stop with the victim mentality, it is unbecoming. You're in the majority, stop trying to pretend you're not.
You're going in my next batch of Soylent Majority... feet first.
Even if there was no security whatsoever on planes beyond a cursory visual inspection of passengers to make sure there weren't any guns or knives on the plane, it would still be safer than travel by car in terms of risk of death per miles travelled. Very few planes fall out of the sky because of bad piloting. A great many cars are as I am typing this right now crashing into other cars, catching fire due to poor maintenance, etc. And let's not forget that all of them are driven by "above average" drivers. -_-
Death by terrorist ranks lower on my list of ways I could die than "slipping and falling in bathtub". Statistically... My odds of dying in a freak accident at home are far higher than death by terrorist. If only my rubber ducky got as much government funding for it's potential to kill me as counter-terrorism does...
People get to hung up on increasing the fuel economy of their small car by another 2mpg. That isn't where the savings are needed. The savings are needed in larger vehicles that real people who don't drive econo boxes like to drive. Vehicles like suv's, trucks and mini-vans that too often struggle to even get 20 mpg.
It's also worth pointing out that most people don't understand MPG. If you're driving a car that gets 10 MPG and you get one that does 20 MPG, you've cut your gas usage in half. But if you trade a car that gets 50 MPG for one that does 60 MPG, you're only getting about a 15% improvement.
This matters if the maintenance cost and purchasing cost is higher than the expected gas savings; In a lot of cases, eeking out that little extra bit of gas savings is more than offset by the higher cost of owning the vehicle.
The petitions on whitehouse.gov have absolutely no value. There's no law compelling the President to respond, although he's stated a response will be made. Several responses to petitions have been little more than filler material -- utterly worthless from a public policy standpoint.
Does anyone here really believe Obama's going to risk appearing 'soft' on terrorism in an election year? Nothing is going to happen on this issue this year, no matter how many judgements, rulings, petitions, etc., are made -- the status quo very rarely changes during an election year. Every effort will be made to delay this until after November...
So, you're saying Whale Oil is the only viable alternative?
Soylent Green is the most environmentally friendly, actually. It even has 'Green' right there in the name. I've long been an advocate of strawmen as the primary ingredient, but a few months ago we reached Peak Strawman here on slashdot. It's clear strawmen are really just a transitional energy source. I've proposed switching to Anonymous Cowards, but most consider them to be an inferior energy source; Removing Sarcasm is a difficult process to industrialize... especially since we still need to retain the highly combustible Fanaticism, which is chemically very similar.
You sure beat the hell out of that straw man, tough guy.
He deserved it. I've seen him lurking in the neighborhood for weeks... dealing bad logic and negative emotions out of his van. I finally had enough when I saw a 15 year old internet troll from/B/ ave. getting high on memes. The moderators won't do anything about it... I've called a dozen times, and twice now they've given me a -1 citation. So I went all Batman on that shit.
In other news, the International Criminal Court has a warrant out for your arrest. Something about war crimes against the nation of straw men.
They never signed the Geneva convention. They have terrorized our forums, used caps lock on innocents... we will give them no quarter. The bombings will continue until the point is made.
Invariably, the greenie perspective will rise up in this thread. Here's the most common ones, and a summary of their replies. Think of this as a table of contents for this thread...
"SUVs are the work of the devil!"
The argument will be that you should drive a smaller car. Then someone else will chime in that you should drive a sub-compact. Then someone else will say that's stupid because what if you need the space. Then yet another person will say you should consider public transportation. Then That Bicyclist Guy will chime in and say his is the greenest solution. Anonymous Coward will then pop in and note that we should all move to communes and engage in purity chanting as our principle form of entertainment. He will be modded -1, funny.
"You should just go all-electric!"
Another classic greenie argument. And therein, discussions of carbon offsets, pollution caused by power plants, and the practical problem of limited range will be had, with much stomping of feet, and occasional use of caps lock. Everybody in the replies will be both right and wrong -- hopefully someone notes that it's the overlap between environmentally-friendly and economically-viable is frightfully small and that's the real problem.
"Diesel is even worse than gas!"
The engineers will tear the poor bastards that say this apart. Diesel is actually cleaner, and people far better than I at explaining the particulars of this will enjoy going into great detail and accumulating many +5, informative comments in the process. Europe will be mentioned; along with vaguely disparaging remarks as to the nationality of the original poster (damn americans -- Why u no diesel?)
Finally, there will be only a small handful of posts that actually talk about the conversion process itself. I'll just go ahead and throw my gas on the fire and suggest a microturbine with a (very) large capacitor, which is how freight trains work. *ducks* Enjoy!
Feel free to share whatever it is you got, or to retract. In the latter case you might also want to kick whoever told you that in the nuts, for making you seem like a racist to complete strangers:P
What I got is a guy who was 2.5 times over the legal limit, fleeing and evading the police, while on parole for a previous robbery. He then blasted through several residential neighborhoods at up to 80 MPH, with two passengers. When stopped, the two passengers were taken into custody without incident. When he exited the vehicle, at gunpoint, with several officers surrounding him, he was giggling, pointing and laughing at the officers, and then reached for his back pocket.
There's your gun. Yes, there wasn't acually a gun there, but consider what would happen if you were faced with a 6 foot tall drunk guy who, with a gun pointed at his head, started giggling and reached for "something". The fact that he wasn't shot dead right there on the spot is amazing. I would not have been so generous.
Officers then swarmed him, tackling him to the ground. He threw two officers off him. Given previous behavior they withdrew and regrouped believing he was under the influence of PCP -- a substance known for it's ability to give its users almost superhuman strength, an inability to feel pain, and delusional thinking. They tazered him at that point. He remained combative, yelling and acting aggressively.
And it's right at this point that the video camera footage you saw comes into play..
So think about this: After endangering hundreds of lives in a high speed chase on residential roads, he's behaving erratically, reaching for his back pocket, manages to throw off two officers, and even tazering him does little to subdue him. You're the police officer. What do you do? You've tried everything else... and you've still got a guy who may or may not have a weapon on him, is acting like he's under the influence of drugs which make him impervious to being wrestled to the ground and similarly immune to your less-than-lethal use of a taser.
Feel free to share whatever it is you got, or to retract.
Camera footage without audio doesn't say much. Even when there is audio, you can't see from each person's vantage point. The Rodney King beating video, for example, was shown by various outlets as an example of police brutality. You can't see the gun he had on him in the video. Camera footage doesn't always tell the whole story; Which is precisely why camera footage doesn't mean anything in a court of law without witness testimony to back it up -- cameras can't be cross-examined.
Worse, the footage is likely low quality (320x280) and time lapsed; That is typical for security cameras. Most cameras in retail establishments are there to keep employees from stealing from the till.
Predicting what a group of people will do is fairly easy; Determining what a particular member of that group will do is very hard. So it can't predict who will attack; It might be able to tell you where though, and possibly when.
But the brute forcer also has to try all sorts of stupid variations:
An 8 character password using ASCII printable characters only has 5,595,818,096,650,401 possibilities. I'm guessing less than that number of songs have been written... even with variations in lyrics. Length does not increase entropy.
Time for the supreme court to strike NSLs down.

"Can the United States torture people with 6 feet of iron wrought fencing, heated, and no lube, because someone pitched a tent in a public place? Yes."
I suppose then I have nothing to worry about, since my profile pics are usually cartoons, inanimate objects, and internet memes.
TSA Agent: "Uhh, miss, you don't look anything like your photo." (holds up photo of pedobear)
Me: (triple facepalm)
This is not unique to men in any way; if you walk into the office wearing only briefs and well tanned skin, with good muscles under it, you will catch quite a few looks from womenfolk - even if you wish that they don't look at you.
