I was told by a S&M chap at a previous company that India has more than a million millionaires. That's a worthwhile market to target _if_ you can easily avoid wasting effort on the substantially more numerous dirt-poor population
Can't a scientist use his skills for building a bridge or building a sculpture?
Speaking as someone with a BA (don't ask) in physics, I can assure you that I can design a bridge... made out of infinitely rigid concrete with inextensible cables of negligible weight.
There's a world of difference between being able to derive the transistor equation from first principles of semi-conductors and being able to design a quality op-amp.
2. First to the market wins syndrome. For some reason being first to the market is seen as essential to obtaining market dominance. It is irrelevant that there are virtually no software products where the first to the market maintains dominance for the long term (I dare anyone to give me an example -- I can't think of any).
I believe Word for Windows was the first Windows word processor and has done quite well since. Then again it did slip 1.5 years while they laboured to get it right. In general, however, I agree with you (as I imagine the author of VisiCalc might)
The Internet is in most respects genderless. I have no idea whether any of the posters on Slashdot are female, or if they are white or black or Asian. How can I discriminate when I don't have anything at all to go upon?
