I think it all depends how fussy you are.. Joomla is good if the installable modules do exactly what you want. But part of the problem is that the modules can't build on one another; they are and remain separate entities so you end up with a LOT of awkwardness... Say for example you have two seperate modules you need to use, an uploading module and a file viewing module. You can never upload it and then view it. You need to go HERE to upload it, and then go HERE to view it. Furthermore, you will have to jump through hoops to make the uploading module put the file in a place that the viewing module can see it. I've set up Joomla sites for people but it is hardly the solution for everyone. It's really an application with a bunch of seperate mini-apps glomed on rather then something that you can build to work as a whole. Don't even get me started on finding a nice template. It is almost impossible to find a really polished one for free. Unless you pay for one a person with mediumish standards will need to relax them quite a bit.
I hate to break it to you, but if you sit around with people IRL and talk about Windows OR mac OR Linux, you don't have much of a social life anyway. The point I was trying to get across is that there IS a community out there for assistance and discussion and we don't need to meet these people face to face. In fact I get the willies just thinking about it.
Every job I've had in which I use a computer to get paid has provided the computer. It's always been a windows PC/laptop, they've always worked fine for me and I've been happy with them. Personally I wouldn't buy a mac. I like trying new things out and the mac world is just too small for me. Incidentally, the trying things out part is the main reason I get jobs using computers in the first place.
Huh? Do you know about IRC? irc.freenode.net,/join #ubuntu,/join #fedora,/join #suse,/join #debian.. the list goes on. You can meet literally hundreds of users right now. Join several forums and/or mailing lists and you can meed thousands, although that will take a day or two.
I completely agree with this.. I don't see why companies headquarter in major centers. A company like IBM could build a campus in the middle of nowhere.. Houses around it would be dirt cheap so you could make a compromise with your employees and pay them some less but not like moving to a third world country. Maybe at one time it was important to have that big office in New York but not anymore, with today's technology.. Especially not a 'technology company'.
Uhmm.. I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but I feel that IS a much better to treat them. The message to these employees is that they are worthless unless they and their families move to the ends of the earth to make a pittance. Globally speaking, how is someone making $2000 US for a couple years ever supposed to move back to North America and have a decent retirement? They aren't just laying off these workers, they are sending them into exile. It's pretty sad.
I'd invite the IBM execs to follow suit and just move the head office to China and make local wages.
That's the thing.. I just realises that she frequently buys the little games from BigFishGames.. and she's quite an avid visitor of People.com and views their flash stuff, as well as YouTube etc... (sigh) it's probably a dealbreaker for me.
It's sad, because she complains nightly about poor performance from her Thinkpad T23 laptop-- the hangs here and there, etc. Ubuntu would run fine on it, but I fear that it may not be for her either. We've come all this way with computers and stil have no perfect working solution.
I'm going to give Wubi (http://wubi-installer.org/) a try on her laptop anyway.. but i'm not holding my breath.
What do you mean 'when'? Google has already openly stated that mining is part of their business model for GMail.. Why would GDrive be any different.
If I was to use it, I think I would take ten minutes to write a script that encrypts the files first. I'd even go so far as to mangle the filenames and keep track of the original names locally.
With that in mind, what the heck, GDrive could be good for small uses here and there if it's free.
I too long for the day that things work as well in Linux... Even on my server downstairs I have to have Windows XP virtual.. My last Epson scanner worked GREAT in Ubuntu.. but that one broke and the Epson I got to replace it was crap... it worked but only if I wanted 300dpi.
Sigh.... I love linux I really do but there are so many things that take twice as long to get working half as well.
I agree..... I signed onto two Citrix servers today in the course of system support and it SUCKS... Problems with copy and paste from the host, problems with hotkeys, network slowness, lack of dual-screen support... it's like looking at the world through a friggin peephole.
Just out of interest, does she like Ubuntu as much as windows? Can she do everything she needs to with it? I was thinking of trying the same experiment with my wife but I swear long and hard enough at wrestling Ubuntu on our main PC.. I'm not sure if I'm in for the headache or not. I'd definitely give her dual boot.
I think we should teach Open Source concepts in Kindergarden. Isn't that when they teach that it's good to share, work as a team, and care about others? How sad that we loose those values so soon in life and they are not usually reinforced.
I'm not an expert by any means, nor do I have an opinion on this or follow this "science".. Which I haven't decided whether it is yet..
However, I did hear that NASA has said the polar caps on Mars are decreasing in size at the same rate as Earth's. Is this true?
"Just don't run it"
This just picks my butt. Comments like this are absolutely useless. I know how to not run it, you know how to not run it.. Everybody commenting on this article knows how to not run it.
The problem is the 95% of people out there that use windows that either A) don't know how to use an alternative, or B) might prefer an alternative but don't have enough motivation.
Until the computer people stop talking like it's a simple task and dismissing the problem, Microsoft will continue to slide under the radar. That is what they count on.
Well unfortunately for Linux, that is where MS has set the bar. You don't really need to know much to run windows. Linux has to either meet this bar and retain it's undoubtedly superior core or be happy with servers and the computer-savvy. People take the perceived path of least resistance.. that is our nature.
So you're saying it is a proper and correct course of action for Ubuntu to sit around and hope that the larger user base will all of a sudden have the desire to be more intelligent about computers? Why would they? If you ask me, the more intelligent decision on their parts is to use the OS that makes 95% of the things they need to do simpler for them-- Windows. You've got to remember that your comment applies... but to life in general.. People have learned and they understand that the easiest way to get things done on a computer is to use one with Windows on it.
Why do technogeeks feel the need to start berating someone the instant they don't know how to use a computer? Do you think surgeons sit around and insult people who can't perform heart bypass surgery? We have experience and knowledge that not all possess, and I dare say that this attitude is not only a big problem for the development of Ubuntu into a competitor for Windows but that it is a big thing for the IT industry to overcome as a whole. We whine about being underpaid for our SKILLS, yet we expect everyone else to THINK LIKE US at the same time. That's NUTS, MAN!
The thing that Microsoft has always understood is that not everyone understands computers and most of them never will. If you want them to use a computer then you HAVE to COME TO THEM. Microsoft spends MILLIONS in R&D making their OS work for these people. Until the Linux world comes to terms with this, it will never ever be in a position to overtake Windows.
REALITY TIME HERE FOLKS... This woman is the AVERAGE USER that Ubuntu or any other distribution WANTS.

THanks man.. I just assigned my first mod point because this is the first time I've laughed out loud at a slashdot comment.

I have two affected drives and there are only instructions for windows on this page.. WTF do I do if I only have Linux??
