  1. Along comes the holier-than-thou down-modders that forget humans are animals as well.

  2. Piss and vinigar on There Are Real Reasons For Linux To Replace ifconfig, netstat and Other Classic Tools (utoronto.ca) · · Score: 4, Interesting

What pisses me off is when I go to run ifconfig and it isn't there, and then I Google on it and there doesn't seem to be *any* direct substitute that gives me the same information. If you want to change the command then fine, but allow the same output from the new commands. Furthermore, another bitch I have is most systemd installations don't have an easy substitute for /etc/rc.local.

  3. I mean, really, you realize there would be a lot more owls if we had never set up there right? We should feel responsibility for weaker creatures, for most of them are our fault.

  4. They are here because *we* are a non-native species introduced. What do you recommend for humans?

  5. We have stopped letting our cats outside, but we got one years ago that was an adult and used to going outside regularly from a previous owner. We let it outside because it was impossible to live with otherwise. After it died, people starting complaining of all the voles and rabbits eating things. People on the block could no longer grow gardens. Our lilly garden would regularly bloom at the beginning of the season and be chewed down to stubs two weeks later. Everything in our shed was chewed by voles, they even made a home (and gave birth in) a bag of soil inside the shed.

So, no they're not a protected species but they are part of the ecosystem. Also, I am a cat fan but I think we should try all alternatives before killing any living thing and think about the repercussions.

Technology generally advances to fill a need and maintain status quo, not to make our lives better. Microwaves and dishwashers weren't needed until both members of the family had to head off to work, so now we need that time savings. More advanced and safer cars, because now not only are he roads are more crowded for same reason but we spend more time in them so they have to be more pleasant environments. Having knowledge in your pocket.. Like say to use it to diagnose an illness, is only required because doctors are more expensive and there is less time to see them. Information is useless unless you process it in a way to make money to put a roof over your head and provide food for your family. Yet everyone with a smartphone is not fabulously wealthy.

Most of that new technology you mention was made popular because it maintains quality of life, not because it increases it. Microwaves allow a now double-working family to make meals for their family. A stove had sufficed before. A phone with the internet doesn't help you pay for a roof over your head any more than letter-mail did before the internet. Stop pointing to advances in technology and claim that every one increases our quality of life. If you look at it that way, everyone right now is poor because there will surely be much more advanced technology in 100 years, perhaps even self driving cars!

  8. If Alexa was truly decent at understanding spoken language, this wouldn't happen without the user giving specific commands. It goes to show, with current state of AI they are still just doing a lot of approximation and guessing.

  9. Ok you may have zero material possessions, good for you if you want to live that way. For example, I didn't have to move our large entertainment unit and our big screen TV; but what am I supposed to do? This stuff doesn't have much of a resale value so am I supposed to just sell it for 1/4 of what I paid for it and live forever without one? Buying it again would cost me at least $1000 between losing the value on it and having to buy it again. We got rid of a bunch of stuff that we didn't need for the new house, and most of it had to be given away. I'm not even calculating that loss in the total cost of moving.

  10. Right now Elizabeth Holmes is reading this somewhere and thinking to herself, "I'm back!".

  11. I had 11K pounds. So you're going to want to do that in one trip. A used semi-truck (sans-trailer) will be around $100,000. But hey, I guess as long as you find 10 people with the same amount of stuff I had then you would be ok. You could use a train, but then you would need the semi-truck at the end point to get the stuff to my house anyway. Also, there was a crew of five people loading the truck on each end, so you will need to pay them as well. I certainly wasn't going to spend my time doing the loading, I make way too much money to not be working during that time while lower wage workers were loading the truck. It was much too big a job for one person anyway, to get it done in an efficient timeline. After all you can't have a semi-trailer parked in a residential zone for days.

  12. Besides, we had 11,000 pounds. But thanks for playing.

  13. How many pounds of stuff did you have? Moving companies don't really make that much overhead and they charge by pound. I had to move 11K pounds almost 2200 miles. First of all, tell me where you are getting the vehicle to move 11K pounds that far in one trip.

  18. Wasn't an option for me. Had to move with several cats and a vehicle. Using a truck would have added at least $4000 onto my moving costs.

  19. Meh, I've rebooted. what's the harm?

  20. Not where I am from. Believe me, we looked into it. Besides, how many people have a vehicle with a 7500lb towing capacity? I would also hazard a guess that rental for that 7500lb trailer is just a shade under what a long distance moving company would charge for it anyway. And then you need to pack all your own stuff, so your time to do that has to be factored in; and for what I am paid for my time the trailer comes out as way more expensive. The moving company came in and did it for free.

  21. U-hail trailers have a limit of 3500 lbs. Maybe if you are single you can fit all your stuff into that, but not if you have a family.

Most trades are pretty shitty jobs. Plus as someone who has recently had a lot of renovation work done, I know the tradesmen around where I live already make a much lower hourly rate then I do. If even 5,000 more were to suddenly flood the market, it would be difficult to make a living wage due to competition. I know some trades make more money but those jobs are few and far between, and then you're into the problem of how you afford the education.
