Possibly I didn't explain myself well.
What I'm saying is a device which does read the biometric data and uses it to hash in a secure way a signature transmitted from the vending point it is connecting to.
In other words, use the biometric data in the device, but don't transmit it - use it internally.
In this way the vendor would know the signature it transmitted and the result of the operation, but not the biometric data needed to generate one from the other.

If a credit card database is compromised, you lose integrity of the card. This means someone else can use the card to impersonate you. But it's a number. You don't really care, since you can get another number and revoke the compromised one.

Anybody thought about decoupling the biometric reading device from the authenticating device ?
In other words, lets have a small device which combines
    a) a biometric reader
    b) some digital certificate
    c) some kind of interface

In order to use some service we would
    a) plug in the device in the vending point/workstation/whatever.
    b) use finger/retina whatever with the device, which would
    c) use the biometric data as a passfrase for the certificate and
    d) transmit it to the service point.

In this way we would have biometric authentication without loosing the privacy of our biometric data, since it wouldn't be transmitted to the service point.
On the other hand we'd need to carry a device of some cost, probably a lot higher than the cost of a smart card or java ring or whatever.

Also several functions of ACDSee will choke if you feed more than 32k of images to it (think "Find Images" function for example).
For example the "Duplicate File" finder won't even load more than 32k images.

OT: anyone knows of a good "find duplicate files" tool ?

You'd better think about dust problems, too. Best place is that vent and fan in the door.

Also, think about this: normally you'll want to draw out heat (spring to fall). However in the winter it could happen you'll want to shut down everything (long weekends when you're not at home, and lots of lightning is announced). You won't risk going your equipment going too cold (below 0C/32F or somewhat, read your manuals), so either provide some source of heating (and test it regulary), or put a reversable fan in the door, controlled by some kind of automatic setup (supposing the rest of your house is somewhat heated). In this case you'll need to take care of the dust again, otherwise the moment the fan reverses you'll blow dust around. Simple solution would be using two different monodirectional vans instead of a reversable one (the kind you install sometimes in bathrooms - when turned off the close and air can't pass anymore).

On the other hand you could just ignore the low temperature issue, and have (for those rare moments you really will shut off everything) a electrical heater with temperature based trigger handy, I don't know over there but here in Italy sometimes you can find 800W ones for less than 40$.
