It is good to hear that I am not the only one who misses the good old BBS days. I miss the ANSI graphics that would scroll down your screen at whatever bps you were connected. The users of most bulletin boards were a lot more friendly. The number one thing I miss is the fact that there was "no advertising" except in the appropriate places, SysOps worked very hard to make sure things ran smoothly, and they usually did. Of course I don't miss my phone bills. I'll never forget my $80 phone call to Canada where I fell asleep waiting for something to d/l and it never logged me off. There has to be some way of reviving this scene, I would love just to see some ansi graphics from groups such as ACiD. I've had almost every speed of modem there was 300, 1200, 2400, 9600, 14,400, 16,800, 28,800, 33,600, and finally 56K.
I was very sad when the Internet killed the BBS sites. We are now forced to mingle in the same area as spammers and Aol Lusers. Before the Inernet became popular, 99.9% of the population (at least in the US) did not know what a modem was.
I think I still have my Oblivion BBS setup backed up to floppy...../me looking through disks.
I've always wanted to build one of these, but with a full time job and full time school, I find it impossible to find the time. Does anyone know about arcade cabinets for mame or Jamma that can be bought outright. The one on at http://www.arcadepc.com looks interesting, but I don't think I would send some $1k plus for something I can't see and try out. Anyone buy something similar or know of a good place to get one?
Thanks!
It must be acknowledged that some games are better than others as far as cheating goes. I personally despise cheating, as it takes away from the fairness of the game. When playing Diablo for instance, you HAD to cheat just to get along in the game. I remember player killers that were indestructible, you could just slash them for hours and they would not die, but they'd kill you with one slash of their sword. With as many cheats as there are for Counterstrike, I can still enjoyably play the game, and still beat many of the cheaters. Without cheating, I usually end up in 1st or 3rd place.
If I had the mad haxoring skillz to make clients for these games, I wouldn't do it. I would use my skills for bigger purposes such as hacking online casinos. How come they seem to be cheat free (although colluding is an obvious problem in online poker rooms). Seems like there would be quite a bit more to gain from this.
The best way to combat cheating is to goto your local lan party. They are popping up all over the world, you can goto http://www.lanparty.com to find one in your area. That way, at least if they're cheating, they can't hide behind their computers. If they're cheating bad enough, you can just walk over and drag them in the parking lot, and beat the #)*$ out of 'em.
The thing people need to realize, is that this was not a hack due to low security, it was a hack due to human error. To me its the equivalent of locking yourself through 18" thick steel walls, with 100 doors that you need to go through, with card security, retina scans, thumbprints, and passwords, and then some idiot who works there lets the pizza guy all the way on the inside so he can go get his wallet. This same guy is the type of person who writes his login name and password on a sticky note and attaches it to his monitor. There is no way you can hold nike negligent, you need to hold the moron who accepted the spoofed id. There was nothing Nike could have possibly done to prevent this.
I think they already did this, they called it Windows.
This has been done before. Remember Alex Kidd?

I don't think anyone has mentioned this before, but does anyone remember the old Sega Master System Game "Alex Kidd in Miracle World"? It was a really fun game. You would beat the boss monsters by playing rock, paper, scissors also known as Janken with them. Some of them had special mindreading powers (which you could also get later in the game). If you had the mindreading power on, you could visualize what they were going to use (rock, paper, or scissors). It was so much more involved than it sounds and took a lot of wits and quick fingers to beat these bosses which increased in difficulty as you went on. Get the faq for this game somewhere and check it out, it is really interesting how they used this as the whole theme for a very successful video game. I can't be the only one to remember this game.
The more the song is played on the radio, the more exposure they get, resulting in people buying their records and merchandise. They have everything to gain by letting people broadcast their songs. In fact, I'm sure some bands would pay to have their songs played over the radio. Consider that today, everyone with a computer and a modem can have their own Internet radio station, since it is digital, anyone could copy it. Anything that can be played via computer can be downloaded and saved to a disk and distributed. I don't care what type of copy protection they come up with. Don't expect these lawsuits to end soon, they're just beginning. -Don't Sue People Panda, Where are you!!!!
