At home, I run Enlightenment, and often have multiple terminal windows open at once. I've already made stupid mistakes like trying to type my GPG passphrase or root password into the wrong window. My concern is that the NSA trying to do something similar could lead to similar problems. Given that governement employees aren't exactly know for being the sharpest pencils in the box, I could easily see someone going to the trouble of doing an hour or more of work, only to discover that they were typing it all in the wrong window on an unsecure network. Whoops!
As I understand it now, the present system where multiple machines are used in government institutions has a black machine that contains secret data, and a white machine that contains only sensitive data. Much harder to type something into the wrong machine when the color of it is immediately apparent to you, I would think.
Spam is certainly very annoying, but is it sacrificing too much of our Internet Freedom to let governments fine and even jail people for spamming?
Your "freedom" ends where my mailbox begins, got it? If you have something to say that you feel is so important, try using one of the following places to do so:
A freebie website from Geocities, etc.
An appropriate Usenet newsgroup
An appropriate IRC channel
An appropriate web based discussion board or mailing list
E-mail is, and will continue to be a person to person medium, not a broadcast medium
regardless what the
DMA might tell you.
"When it comes to mammals, the only way anyone has found to extend their lives is to restrict their food, giving them about 40 percent fewer calories than they would eat if left to their own devices, Dr. Helfand noted. Then they live 30 percent longer than would be expected."
Hear that, IT managers? Lock up your geeks in their offices and cut off their food supply! They'll live longer which means that they'll get more work done!
About halfway through page 2, the document mentions refrers to "long term stability" as being 48 hours or more. Is it just me, or does that sound kinda um, ridiculous?
I can see it now... FBI agents showing up at an ISP every other day because they need to reboot Carnivore...:-)
I don't know much about Exchange Server, but I can give you two good reasons why not to use Outlook:
Forcing users from around the company to switch from products that they know and are comfortable with to a product that they don't know and might not be comfortable with is only going to frustrate them and alienate them from management and
especially the IT deparment, whose "fault" they'll percieve this as.
Outlook is chock full of security holes. Thanks to those holes, it makes worms like
Kak possible, whereas it wouldn't be a problem with any other e-mail client.
There's so many people with computers and on the net who are interested in Pr0n these days, who's going to care about being able to generate fake clothing on characters?:-)
Since it seems that this whole election is coming down to Florida, I think people will find
this article to be of interest. It talks about vote fraud occuring back in 1997, where the ex-mayor of Miami, Xavier Suarez, had his election overturned on charges of vote fraud.
What's slightly more disturbing is that the article goes on to say:
Suarez now sits on the executive committee of the Miami-Dade Republican party and was specifically involved this year in helping get out the Republican vote
Is it just me, or does anybody else see this as a significant problem? Especially with the outcome of this election hinging on Florida's vote.
Not such a great victory

IMHO, this isn't such a great victory for the anti-spam community. Rather, I think this is a case of a business wanting to pay the person money up front (think "settlement"), as opposed to having to fight a lawsuit at some point in the future. (Not that there would be much basis for one, but
they might not know that...)
I think of it as tripping and falling on the sidewalk in front of a business - If you bitch to the business owner, he'll probally pay you $n, where n is two digits, to replace your torn pants, as opposed to having n be 4 or 5 digits if he doesn't do anything and you decide to sue him for negligence.
"We are very up-front about what we do and how we do it," said Cajunnet general manager
Eugene Wanless. "I think a lot of people consider it spam. We'll send out between 5 (million) and
20 million emails at a time and take a lot of heat from people whining and complaining. Eventually
our ISPs wind up turning us off.
Ah, the typical spammer mentality. When we're upset about paying (either directly or indirectly) for their crap in our mailboxes, they call it "whining". I think that speaks volumes for the respect, or lack thereof, that this particular spammer has for other peoples' property.
OBInfo: I maintain a FAQ for figuring out the origin of forged spams and how to complain about them
here. I hope folks find it helpful.
The site really doesn't seem to have any actual content on it, other than a single page saying "we had this domain first so Dreamworks can't have it". Understandable, but if the owner bought the domain for the sole purpose of pissing off Dreamworks, it seems like a case of domain name squatting to me.:-(
Uh, according to
this URL, slander is spoken defamation, libel is when it's written, as Leonardo alledges about Salon.
Geez, I'm not a laywer, and even I knew the difference! If this lack of intelligence is typical of the SMDI folks, then they deserve to have their scheme get cracked.
I've been playing various computer games since Doom came out back in 1993, here are a few random thoughts I have on the subject:
Doom is Satanic? For cryin' out loud, you're
killing demons in the game! What could be less satanic than that?! Now if the game had you fragging Saint Peter, that'd be a different story...
Carmageddon - What a great stress reliever that was! Instead of becoming another statistic of road rage, I get to take out my frustrations on the "pedestrians" in this game. Did I mention I've never been involved in any auto accident?
The rest of the games I've played (Total Anhilation, Command and Conquer, etc.) were of lesser help to me, but all served as great way to relieve stress and blow off excess steam. Given that, like most/. readers, I am a software developer/sysadmin, I can accumulate quite a bit of stress at times.
I wish that politicians, religious folks, etc. would lighten up about violence in video games, as I think they are the best thing to happen to geeks like me, in that they give us a harmless way to relieve stress.
If that's the case, then why is he using a free website like Geocities for his stuff? Would paying ~$20 a month for webhosting really be that expensive for him? Seriously.
The coolest thing about my job is that Xbox is a fixed platform. Performance is my favorite thing,
and for the first time since the original 4.77 MHz PC, I can actually justify taking the time to
understand things down to the metal and figure out how to really optimize, because the machine is
never going to change.
First time since the IBM PC this going to be a fixed platform?!?
I guess he must have gone into a coma or something and completely missed the NES, Genesis, TG-16, SNES, Neo*Geo, Saturn, Play Station, etc.:-)
Just like department stores IRL are already gearing up for Christmas, despite the fact that Thanksgiving (or even Halloween, for that matter!) hasn't been celebrated yet, Slashdot is following suit.
I guess what people are saying is right, the Internet really isn't that different from Real Life, after all.;-)

Share and enjoy.

Think of this like golf, a higher number is not your friend. :-)

If there's supposed to be seperation of Church and State, why did I have to go to a local church to cast my vote this morning? :-)
