  1. Re:I thought we already had this option... on ESPN's Play To Make ISPs Pay · · Score: 3, Informative

Many do not realize that ESPN is already the single most expensive channel on their cable or satellite line-up.

You pay a flat fee for expanded cable but your cable company buys the rights to these channels in bundles from the international megacorps that own whole groups of channels. For instance Viacom owns Nickelodeon, MTV, VH1, Spike, etc. Disney owns Disney, ABC (broadcast), ABC family, SOAPnet, etc. In most cases the cable company is given an all or nothing offer from the parent corp.

ESPN is already the most expensive channel to buy the rights to it and failure to carry ESPN would mean death to any cable or satellite system. Can you imagine a cable company that did not carry Nick or MTV? Can you imagine a cable company that did not carry ESPN? No one can.

You know how your cable bill increases each year? Most of that increase is due to the rates being raised by the networks to the cable company. If the gloves were to come off in these negotiations, who is the 800 lb gorilla, Charter or Disney? (Hint: Disney).

This is just one more example of large media companies putting the thumbs screws to smaller communication companies. Personally, I NEVER watch ESPN or visit their website but I pay them anyway. I pray for a legally enforced a la cart model for both cable/sat companies AND their subscribers. Most consumers are unaware of this therefore it is unlikely to change.

The Nintento Wii and SCEA Playstation 3 both have very similar "you can no longer monitor you own network" provision in their online EULAs. How is CNN doing it new or important? This is a long time problem and nothing new. These sections, however, are non-enforceable because they are not legal. If the EULA said you must close your eyes and were not allowed to open them it would also be non-enforceable and not legal.

This is official notice that I have patented the English alphabet and the mathematical operations of addition and subtraction. If you have posted to Slashdot today using any of the following letters (abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz) in their lower case or capital forms, you must pay me. Also, with my addition and subtraction patent I also have rights to multiplication (aka iterative addition) and division (iterative subtraction).

    No it's not, it's bourbon.

Jack Daniels is definitely not bourbon. It is a Tennesee Whiskey.

Bourbon is made is barley, corn and water and Jack Daniels is indeed made with corn. Jack Daniels is Bourbon Whiskey. Whiskey is barley and water (note, no corn). Corn is for Americans. I live in Iowa. We have plenty of corn. Now, Jack Daniels is good but nothing, IMHO, beats a good Irish Whiskey. FLAMEBAIT: Scotch Whisky is inherently inferior to Irish Whiskey. Scotch is for stuck up Americans that don't know what good whiskey is supposed to taste like. DOUBLE FLAMEBAIT: Whiskey should be consumed in a glass at room temperature. No ice. No water. Sipped or gulped as you prefer.

I don't believe anyone glosses over that most desktop software is developed and sold for a platform that has the vast preponderance of the market penetration due, in part, to the illegal practices of said platforms manufacturer. You should realize we are excited by this news because it represents a push back again this monopoly. When the market is a overflowing with a veritable myriad of platforms all sharing open standards then, and only then, will our "Information Age" will be truly healthy and robust. In a better world, your software could be purchased for any number of platforms and the data files would be identical and portable between platforms. - "Power to the pupil."
