  1. Bike Shop on Best Results From Bartering Computer Services? · · Score: 1

I've been doing a bunch of IT support for a local bike shop, and now I get to work on my bike there after hours. It sure is nice to have all the parts and tools I need and the expert advice is always good. A bike stand that's bolted to the floor sure spoils a guy!

This sounds like a good opportunity for the Be Operating System sources. Not that I'm much on closed source systems, BeOS was just so nice to use. With the release of Linux 2.6 and soon to be eminent branching to FreeBSD 6.0-CURRENT, we're seeing brighter desktop systems comming forth. The competion heating up in the windowing world is exciting, and it's nice to have BeOS in there as a benchmark.

I think this really speaks at the heart of the matter, don't screw with the experts. Look at the BSD case and now Apple's case. UNIX is just too public to really have any single owner. I mean, UNIX is like the wheel in a way.

This is a good case for all open source software. I was talking with some neighbors, and while not being industry experts, they understand that the SCO v IBM case is a joke.

I think that if IP changes hands more than once, it should be made public. So many eyes seeing it pretty much makes it public anyway. Think about the BeOS sources and how many eyes have seen it by now. This court case is such a massive injustice already, that it exposes the weakness of the US just as the OJ trial did.

When will enough be enough? We must work to stop this nightmare system. I think we need real political unrest NOW! If we're unable to rock the boat, Bush will remain in power, and these SCO guys could win. We already know that we do not want our President to be like Nixon, yet a guy very much like him is sitting in our office!

Please, get in touch with your local Linux User Group. If none exists, start one yourself and get the ball rolling.

Irish *Republican* Army, dude. In case you have not noticed, republican types tend to have a propensity towards violence when they think their republic (or hopes for which) is threatened.

Besides, this conflict has been ongoing since before the US was a country. Not to mention the fact that the US was founded in part by people like them.

It's time for the Brits to submit. They need to just finally admit that they were wrong to impose their will. I guess they're proud to have oppressed the Irish all this time? I think that is why there is no mention.

It's infighting among Christians, so it's *very* touchy, especially here in the US. No way is Bush that dumb. He does want the office again, unfortunately.

I'm still somewhat new to using X Windows and had settled with Gnome/sawfish because I thought it was pretty good... until yesterday. I installed Windowmaker and am very impressed.

One thing I'd like though is something similar to the BeOS Deskbar. Under Windowmaker when an app is opened I get an icon in the lower left which is fine except that I cannot choose between the different windows which are part of the app. Any suggestions?

I feel for you, Virg. The very same thing happened to me with my Dell Inspiron 3000. I bought it weeks before Windows 98 came out so I ended up getting Windows 95 with the tied in version of IE that's been getting so much attention in this case. Back when I bought this machine there really wasn't much option unless I were to buy a Powerbook. Since I wanted to run BeOS a Powerbook was out of the question.

Man, it's going to hurt if M$ gets off as easily as the current settlement. IMHO Microsoft is a terror to the free market. We the people have to power to show them what true freedom is when we decide that we've had enough of their crap. Now is the time to make sure you let the court know how you've been stepped on by Microsoft and their "innovation."

The difference with Christian Science is the choice is yours. Nobody in that religion will force you in or in any way try to get money out of you (aside from the usual collection plate which you do not have to put money into), etc. I don't know anything about Scientology aside from what I hear, but it sounds like they really like to assimilate people.

So Twain's essay isn't as much about slamming CS as it is slamming the attitude that causes cases such as the one above. People get sucked into a religious faith and then practice / protect that faith to the extreme.

What this has taught me about Scientology: "Do not love thy fellow man if he hath dissed our church."
