    Problem is, you gave the wrong answer to the question "what could possibly go wrong?" The right answer includes the possibility that a compromised refrigerator could be the foot in the door that allows an attacker into the network, which can then be used to compromise other devices on the network, which can in turn be used for any number of bad things. Same with internet-connected light bulbs, which was a real item in the news not long ago. So, yes, even an internet-connected refrigerator should be designed with security in mind. You have to think beyond the implications of breached security affecting only the device itself.
