I worked for the web development team at the BBC (Bush House in London) on contract in 1999. The majority of our team used Mandrake Linux (version 6 at the time!) on our desktops. The development language of choice was Perl. The database platform was Oracle but prototyping was done locally using MySQL.
I think it was just easier to run a UNIX environment locally since that was what we were developing for... - being a non-profit organisation probably allowed for the leniency in desktop policy that made such things possible!
I used to work for a VERY large media company in
the UK... we had about 4 or 5 developers within
our group (out of 7) who were using Linux
(Mandrake 6 at the time) and I heard the majority
of the technical services dept (sysadmins) ran
either solaris or linux on their desktop. Now I
am in a MS shop in the US and there is nothing
but NT with crashes almost daily even with SP6:(
... at least I have 2 linux boxes at home.
Looking through the perl script that they have on
SourceForge, I noticed a comment that there is no
drop in freesql and that one should simple change
your username and schema for connecting...
Does this mean you would just start over any time
you wanted to change your db schema?
Is the content of freenet read only?
I wonder about the value of a sql repository if
the structure is read only... how would permissions to change data be handled?
This guy truly was quite revolutionary in his thinking regarding chess playing! I am currently developing some chess playing software... during my research I was astounded by the fact that his theories in this field are still the cornerstone of the game playing behind most modern chess programs!
You can also contact the Bureau of Consumer Protection. Just look for the Attorney General's Office in your State. In my experience, they tend
to take the law to the letter and don't really protect the consumer a whole lot though...:(
The idea of a 3d interface has interested me for a while... Does anyone know of any windowing system that offers anything approaching this? I guess transparency and "weird angles" to windows are a start to this idea...
What do/.'ers think of the concept of a 3d interface? Surely it must allow you to interact with more material allowing you to be more productive? Can it be done effectively on a 2D monitor or do we need new hardware?

I think this is what he was complaining about ...

Besides, I think more than one sentence is in order, don't you?
