  1. Rational thinking. on Uranium Pebbles May Light the Way · · Score: 2, Redundant

People are going to have to start to do some sensible and unemotional re-evaluation of nuclear power generation pretty damn soon.

Yep, some people will die from an increased incidence of cancer and yes, some people will die from nuclear mishaps and/or terrorism.

However, global climate change will kill billions of people unless fossil fuel utilisation is vastly reduced over the next century.

Renewable energy supplies may solve some of the problem. USAians forgoing their gas guzzling trucks and starting to think some about energy efficiency willl solve some more. However, the only current economically viable non CO2-producing technology is nuclear fission and adopting it on a wider scale will save lives and help to protect the environment.

You'll never convince the lumpenproletariat of the fact, though.

From where I sit, there's a reasonable amount of Linux. My company bases its main product around Linux. It sits in big racks in switch sites, so there's not much chance you'd be aware of it. I know that Nortel uses a lot of HP and Ericsson base at least some of their stuff on Sun. The bits of Lucent that I'm aware of (GPRS/UMTS equipment) use Sun servers and SPARCengine boards.

Telecoms equipment manufacturers are a conservative lot, so I imagine that it'll be a few years before Linux really takes a hold, but Microsoft at the heavy duty end of telecoms? I can't see it somehow.

While I've got no great sympathy for companies involved in animal testing, animal rights activists have targetted HLS employees, shareholders and even some employees of HLS's bankers, inflicting violent beatings and firebombings.

Given this, it's not surprising that they're pretty paranoid on several levels.

  5. CA on CA Announces Program Ports to Linux · · Score: 1

CA's business model is only one step on the legal side of the mafia's. I've been in two separate companies who ran Ingres on licenses that had been purchased from ASK. CA don't run a "purchase" model, you have an initial license to use the software, followed by annual license renewals. If you don't give them 30 days prior notice before cancelling your license renewal and try to cancel, they'll set the lawyers on you. In addition - their sales people will always try to switch you to their annual license renewal (with a minimum five year contract) on promises of great things. No one - Linux person or otherwise should have anything to do with CA. They're a completely immoral company.
