"The scary thing is that this is one of the more useful applications of Java I've seen..."

That's really pathetic. We've written a robust distributed monitoring system completely in Java and integrated it into our website with Servlets. Creating a distributed system and controlling it via a servlet through RMI is insanely simple and performs suprising quickly...

I'll grant you that this is one of coolest applications of Java... but useful? You people must not get out much... heck... I don't get out much either so that's not really an excuse. If someone would just get a stable, reliable, and fast Java 2 VM running on Linux some of you people will see what Java is capable of. It's really a shame. Sun's released HotSpot on NT and Solaris, mix the two together and you have x86 on UNIX, what's the problem here?

  2. Oh no! Mozilla's turning into EMACS! on Mozilla Picks Up Third Party IRC and RT Messaging · · Score: 1

Arg! Bloat! It has an integrated editor, mail/news reader, and web browser, now it's getting IRC and IM... Next thing you know they are going to rewrite gecko and the entire UI in lisp, call it mozlisp, and make you memorize hundreds of obscure commands like META-b-x-add-bookmark.

I can see it now, in three years Mozilla will be a HUGE creature weighing in a 60 megs and carrying so much functionality users will never have to leave it... and then AOL will start requiring that you call it Mozilla/Linux and RMS will have a fit. Aint life grand?

    Don't hurt me, I'm kidding.

  4. so-called open source platform? on The Competition for Developers · · Score: 1

Here's the text of an email I just sent the author... In your C-Net article titled "Microsoft sees threats over developers" you refer to Linux as "a so-called open source platform that incorporates the work of volunteers developers worldwide". so-called \So"-called`\, a. So named; called by such a name (but perhaps called thus with doubtful propriety). so-called adj : doubtful or suspect; "these so-called experts are no help" [syn: alleged(a), supposed] Linux is truly an open source platform, so why the derogatory adjective? If that is not a quote, and it's not quoted, your "so-called" article reeks of doubtful propriety. Chris Moyer Quicksand Development www.atwatch.com moyerca@one.net
