I think the key fact here is that he was using school resources when he posted. Most private companies would consider taking action for misuse of company resources (time, computer, network).
Also, the newspaper guy did not get this guy fired. The guy got himself fired. If he wants to post stuff (like that or otherwise not work-related), do it on his own time at his own place.
