  1. Eye-opener? Maybe later. on Building The Ubervirus · · Score: 1

What I fail to see is how this could be an eye-opener. Within the /. and HNN communities the facts presented in the article should be obvious. Disaster almost happened at least twice already (remember melissa? loveletter?), and the only reason things didn't turn out worse was because of either some kind of empathy and/or bad coding on the virus-programmers' side. Heck, most of us could modify loveletter's code in 5 minutes to make it 10 times more deadly to those windows boxen.
I know people are going to yell "What disaster? These viruses affects only Micros~1!" but face it, that's where the majority of the money invested in information are.
I _do_ think that should a larger newsprovider, like cnn, post these facts, albeit 'dumbed down', we would see a genuine eye-opening of the general public, PHB's included.
    That would be something!

  2. No on X Windows Must Die! · · Score: 4

While X-windows might be slow and could use some optimizations, there is one thing that puts it way ahead of Windows and Mac GUIs: Remote Display.
I would never go from X to a hyper-accelerated GUI which only provides local display, and have to use third-party programs to display remotely! Have you ever tried to do serious work over VNC or PCAnywhere? (Hint: It's _dog_ slow.) And some of us still have to use slow lines from time to time, thankyouverymuch.

(Q3A isn't very slow using XF86 && glX either, now is it?)

  3. Mozilla (will be) release(d) on An Overview Of PNG; Mozilla M17 (Updated) · · Score: 4

How come most of the time when a new mozilla release is mentioned on /., it isn't availiable for download? (Not counting nightly builds...)
Maybe I'm just reloading too often.

  4. Is it _really_ clever... on George W. Bush buys anti-Bush names · · Score: 2

...to have people that click on the URL www.bushsucks.com redirected to his original homepage? Isn't that kind of like admitting that he, in fact, sucks? Just a thought.

  6. Suicide attempt... on Announcing Customizable Slashdot · · Score: 1

    Whoa!
I checked the "Slashdot stats" box (and others) just minutes after the boxes became customizeable. The load for /. was then 1.09/1.07/0.83, and now it's up in the high fifteens!
Slashdot seems to be well on the way to /.ing itself out of existence! *grin*

  7. /.ed? on Kernel Musings: Unix and NT · · Score: 1

If NT's so good, how come the site www.winntmag.com, which _should_ be running NT, seems have been /.ed? If it doesn't even stand up to the /. effect, then what good is it? ;)
