    It's SO cathartic!
    Yeah! Fsck you you slowpoke! SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT! The PASSING lane is for PASSING you moron!

    Then there's tolls.
    It tends to be in states (like Florida) where there's no state income tax - DAMN, $1.50, for one lousy toll? (of course this road is like a ghost town, because nobody can afford to drive on it - it's the hwy just east of Orlando).
    Then there are states like California, where there is an obnoxious state income tax, and NO toll roads (yea! I'm for that - on some of these roads the booth slows you down so much that you don't really save any time over the sidestreets).
    Then there are states like Illinois, which just SUCK, because the state income tax is high, and they still bend you over at toll booths.

    Jafac's second law of freeway driving: (this one may actually be worth something) -

    ALWAYS accellerate into a lane change. If you do not, you will effectively be moving BACKWARDS, relative to the traffic around you. Ask yourself: is that safe? If you're constantly moving FASTER than the traffic around you, relative to them, you're moving forwards - not backwards, backwards is bad. Backwards is unsafe. Unless you have eyes in the back of your head, or can take your eyes off the road long enough to turn your head around, or use your mirrors.
    Also, signalling for a lange change would be nice, but, that's probably too much to ask for for most people.

    but if it's stop and go, and the car in front of you goes (as soon as possible, instead of picking their butt for a half-hour), then if you DON'T apply your brakes until the last possible second, chances are that the car in front of you will move, and you won't have to stop at all, which would have the enormously beneficial effect of eliminating the stop for all the people behind you.

    Unfortunately, the guy in front of you apparently has hemmorhoids.

    This is my personal pet peeve, and my solution to "The traffic problem."

    Make the driving test so difficult, that only competent drivers can pass it. Remove the idiots from the road, and voila! less cars=less traffic congestion.

    Methinks that the Oil Company lobby has something to do with why it's so easy to pass driving tests. More drivers=more consumption.

    And as far as the I-94 goes, I used to live in Chicago, and man, it's bad there, but I tell ya, there are MUCH worse places in the country to drive, and most of them are in the northeast. Boston in particular is very unforgiving, crazy narrow streets winding around aimlessly, going from one-way to two-way, back to one-way for no reason. But Illinois' number one problem will always be the Illinois Department of Transportation, who's slogan should be:
    IDOT: We can't even spell "Idiot" right!

    IIRC, that study put the price at somewhere around $16/gal. (also including ecological disasters from oil spills, etc.) -
    but if you ask me, they forgot to include global warming, which would probably put the cost of gasoline at a MUCH MUCH higher price, once all life on Earth is eradicated.

    Well, if it came from WSJ, then it's likely to be pro-Microsoft FUD.

    It's possible that this may be more noise than anything else. We all KNOW Microsoft has huge cash reserves, but maybe not enough to pull off a stunt like this. . . maybe. . .
    So perhaps this FUD is an exercise to see what AOL will do, or see if MS can bait AOL into doing something that could get them into trouble.

    Things were there, have mysteriously disappeared.
    Are they chilling out in a concrete cell someplace in the Nevada desert? Have they been kidnapped by UFO's?

    Well, you're wrong.

    If Microsoft products are better - Mister "hotmail" mail account, then please explain to the rest of us why Microsoft's best and brightest engineers could not convert Hotmail's servers to NT after Microsoft bought Hotmail? Seems the Unix solution Hotmail was using prior did the job, and the NT solution MS tried to crowbar in just plain couldn't handle it, no matter how much money they threw at the hardware, no matter how much they tweaked and patched.

    In other words, when you get that spiffy new ISDN, ADSL, or Cable access set up, don't throw away that old modem, it may one day be your only ticket to freedom. A slow ticket, but a free one.

    Also, bear in mind that the big news item of late about cable internet service is that cable providers can selectively block access to sites if they want.

    I use my disposable free email accounts for spambait, but for reliability, I use my work account.

    I once got a message in my Yahoo inbox that was two months old. I complained to their admin, and got no response. Oh well. It was free.

    My 11 year old son has been begging me to go see South Park.

    I say NO WAY. I saw that movie myself first. I don't mind if he hears dirty talk, swear words, etc. I know he knows every word in the book - hell, I did when I was his age, but I told him until he learns to stop using the word "fart" in inappropriate situations (ie. in front of his mother, or especially infront of MY mother), I deem that he does not have the responsibility to handle those words, and that's what being an adult is all about.

    I would feel the same way if he was 17, unless he could show that he did have the ability to control his behavior.
    I told him that if he could stop using the word "fart" or stop belching loudly like he does to impress his freinds, for 1 week, I'd take him to see it. His record so far is 2 days.

    I can solve your slow server problem!!!

    Provide the file as downloadable, NOT as a stream.

    Person A downloads the file, distributes it to person B, and person C, who distribute it to persons D, E, F, and G, etc. INSTEAD of persons A-Z trying to all view the stream at once, and not one of them getting a decent viewing experience because the server's bogged.

    If I ever get a chance to view it on your site, I'll decide if I like it, THEN I'll buy the CD. Until then, my money sits in MY bank account, collecting interest for me, instead of your bank account collecting interest for you.
    Multiply that by 100,000 pissed off would-be internet viewers, and you have probably enough money to pay off Puff-Daddy's punk ass.

    I said it before and I'll say it again.

    If you and your industry want to attract talent, then pay your existing workers MORE, and offer prospective employees more.

    I think your statement about "at any price" is complete bullshit. What is the highest amount you've offered someone? Maybe you need to go higher still.

    Supply and Demand.

    Now, after this "investment", in 5-10 years, it will pay off, because people going into college NOW will see how lucrative it is in the computer industry, and go into CS. Skill shortage problem solved.

    If you can't afford it, then maybe:
    A: Lower your marketing budget.
    B: Cut your CEO's salary in half (aw, poor baby has to get FACTORY sound on his Lexus)
    C: Stop wasting money on immigration lawyers
    D: Raise your product prices

    Damn, when my company was closed two years ago, I was getting calls from recruiters two days before I even found out. Over a weekend, I got over 50 voice mail messages on my machine.

    I'm an art school dropout, and at the time I had a CNE, and 5 years of TECH SUPPORT experience, and I was making $45k, moderate travel.

    Don't tell me you know how to code and can't find a job because that's just plain bullshit, unless you smell like rotting flesh at 100yds.
