I read Slashdot everyday and wade through the sometimes interesting, sometimes boring, sometimes funny stories and posts. I've actually used (written code) for the AV search engine.. it is in fact very easy to use. I don't think they care about "open source" in the development of the search engine. I suspect that they are more interested in 1) getting developers to create and fix interfaces in other than C and VB (the only official supported languages) and 2) getting a "serach by AltaVista" logo out on as many sites as possible.
