The coolest thing was being able to open the apps I wanted to open on login and arrange them however I wanted, and then save my workspace. Next time I login my mailtool and everything else load up exactly where I told them to. Damn Solaris was cool. Can you do that type of stuff under Linux?
And, applications don't steal focus from each other. Which happened about 5 times in WinNT while I was trying to write this!!!
And your data will be the most insecure it has ever been. Yea, I'd trust my data to a Microsoft-run server. Whatever. I wouldn't even trust them to store my pr0n files.:)
I think Dell/S3's new box would be better suited, but...
I'm guessing that the built-in MPEG decoder for the TiVo is MPEG2 since that is what DVD's use. (and anything newer would be overkill) MPEG 2 decoders should be able to decode the MPEG 1 - Layer 3 portion which is MP3.
Plus, hopfully they'll have a DSP dedicated to decoding the MP3 rather than a general purpose CPU with something like WinAmp running on it.
But then again, you're dealing with MP3 to begin with. You can't shine sh1t into gold. I would be curious to see just how good MP3 could sound if Dell (and S3 who is actually manufacturing the unit) went the hi-fi route and avoided using cheap IC's.
You will get a better audio signal from a separate MP3 box than a soundcard in a computer. Then again, this is MP3 we're talking about so it isn't exactly hi-fi to begin with.
Hopefully, it'll look good and have a choice of black or champagne case to fit most audio systems.
From my quick scan of certain portions of the PDF SDK, you should be able to create a PDF document without the use of Distiller. Although, I would expect this would quickly get complicated, but not over everyone on/.'s head.
However, I would like to see an Open Portable Document Standard similar to PDF, or see PDF become an open standard. Just to get it out from under the control of Adobe, since it can be such a powerful format. My entire department is switching to PDF (from hardcopy) for document distribution world-wide.
I don't think that everyone that releases software for Linux has to 'get' the Free Software or Open Source ideals. Why should they? Not everyone that runs Linux understands them.
I do believe that it is OK for companies to develop for or port to Linux just as they would Windows or the Mac. You can't force your specific set of ideals on them, if you could, no one would be allowed to run Linux. Well OK, maybe Linus could run it...
Plus, it's a bad move to scare off everyone that doesn't subscribe to the ideals. You do want software to be available for Linux don't you?
I had no problem connected my three computers together and getting them to share a cable modem. I just bought LinkSys' Cable/DSL Router with built in firewall (with NAT), DHCP server, and PPPOE (althought I have no idea what I can do with this?), plugged my PC's into it's 4-port switch, and set it up via it's Web based interface.
Send those adverts back to your credit card company in the return envelope. :)

That's what I thought it stood for, but I didn't want to presume too much. Thanks for the description.

I know that NFS is Network File System, but what is NIS?
At least Microsoft finally caught on to adding FS quotas to Windows 2000. Does it anyone know how well it works?

Really! If I was going to pay $300k for a car, it'd be a Porsche 550A Spyder. *DROOL*

WTF? OK, now I know this has got to be some kind of sick joke!

Security authentication for Hotmail is done through Microsoft PassPort which obviously runs on Windows NT (or 2000).

Yes, I loved that aspect of Solaris when I was in engineering college. Although, I thought it was an attribute of all UNIX flavors.
I've been waiting for Microsoft to play catch-up for years now, and it appears that they'll never get it right.

Kinda like 'slashdot dot org'?

Damn straight...
Crackers are the guys that cracked all the games for the C64 back in the day! (and the games/applications for all other platforms)
Crackers are not bad-guy-hackers.

Dammit, I should have read your whole post before responding. ;)
I would rather see an MP3 encoder that is built in hardware than one in software, you know solidstate.

Bang & Olufsen I presume? They're ugly and proprietary (cables).

They also don't tell what sort of connection it'll have to your LAN or PC. Does anyone know?

What is NP complete?

I disagree. This isn't going to work very well... most of the pr0n on the Net is of Asian women anyway.

Actually, if you invert the colors on pr0n, you get very sexy blue chicks. :)

Linksys just recently added IPSec Passthru to their beta firmware for the router. Do you have any idea what its use is?

I'm guessing you didn't see the ;).
