Bullying is a BIG concern though - through email and also through MSN and IMing. Of course it is up to parents to monitor and educated their children about the dangers and to help their children become confident to use the internet safely.
I say get a decent kids email provider NOT a free Yahoo or whatever account - which will just spam your child to within an inch of their innocence. I use safensoundmail but have yet to find a decent MSN controller. I think that on instant messaging bullying can get more viscous than it would in the playground.
