Does Microsoft really have the right to call this copyrighted material under these cirumstances?

Man this simplification is not the crux of the deal. This statement is troll-like and dubious.

Ok, I hope that what I say will be usefull and inspire some of you to go and get involved in this issue beyond ranting about how bad the current system.

Yes I use Napster. I use it to find rare stuff and stuff that I would never buy or already own. Let me tell you that Napster is not an easy game unless you are looking for something ultra-popular or are willing to spend some great deal of time. This is even true with a fast connection.

Looking at these issues I think that the Artists could really allure users away from Napster and make the bucks that they are missing. If Artists could provide reliable fast ways of downloading individual and entire albums of mp3s for decent prices. Sounds like a pipe dream with the way the current system works huh?

Well maybe not, if we the technologically enhanced step into the fray. Why don't we start campaigns to educate the artists we love and try to win their favor. Hey stop laughing, it might just work.

I have written a letter to my band of choice, the forward thinking level headed band Depeche Mode. Obviously their are certain bands that I wouldn't bother thinking about if I were you. Metallica and Dr. Dre combined have the I.Q. of a salad, so don't even bother.

We all the know that the system sucks and that things like Napster are a natural consequence of the shitty system. Lets stop ranting and try to change the minds of the artists that didn't fry every one of their brain cells on drugs.

    Thanks

I am positive about what I have said.

This is not purchasing software for the computer labs being subsidized by bookstore sales, this software is for the students and it is paid for by the students.

Whats more is that many people don't even know about the software deal because you are not told that you get the software at the time you register. I would figure if at least you were being forced to buy a product, you would at least know that you get the product!! Many people that I have asked about this deal don't even know about it.

You pay for this software with hidden fees attached to your tuition bill!! This is a cut and dried scam!

But I guess when you have as much money as M$, anything is legal.

I wish that judge could have taken another look at those licesing deals. I seriously doubt that this is the only one that M$ has cut illegally.

  7. Freedom to eradicate on Microsoft Loses · · Score: 3

I go to school at the University of Texas and down here you can see one of the most corrupt software deals M$ ever made. Our school has signed on with M$ to sell all "major" M$ products ( I am talking about Office Frontpage NT etc....) for $5.00 a cd. To most people this looks like M$ is giving away all its major products to our students. This is not so, I found out that we pay for M$ products as part of our tuition!!! This is a corrupt deal if I have ever heard it. We were never told of or even asked if we wanted their products. Ladies and Gentlemen this is bullshit.

This is the kind of corrupt deal that makes me want to see M$ disapear. Yeah our school officials were definitely part of the deal but so was M$ for taking the money from the school for this licensing deal.

These kind of tactics are definitely against most legal principles I have ever heard of. This is a state instituion! run with public money!!

This is a very crafty scheme indeed. Not only does take the money without even truly selling the software but it hooks the students into this school into their software.

If M$ gave away the software I wouldn't be against it. Other companies do this and I believe its a fair practice, and so is giving very steep student discounts. I understand that getting students hooked into brands of software is importent. But this deal is rediculous and corrupt.

This is just what I personally have seen of M$, from what I have heard these deals get much worse.

I will be happy on the day that such business practices are punished. Even software developers need to be a little fearfull of trying unfairly to eliminate the competition and pulling people unwittingly into tricky deals.

We punish this practice on other businesses, why do people think that technology is seperate.

Personally I think that the people oppose the punishment of M$ sound like people who are trying to defend themselves because they fell for the tricks of this corrupt scheme. They went along and now have to justify why they were a sheep in Bill Gates' flock of morons.
Personally I hope they will wake up and think for themselves. This is much harder than going along with everybody else.

    Cheers

Most people I have met and talked with have liked a particular interface because of sheer ignorance and habit. It is easy real easy to dislike something you don't know shit about. The annoying thing is that with a M$ ruled computer world ignorance is at an all time high. Plenty of very smart people are being brainwashed into thinking that Windows is the way that they should interact with a computer. So of course /. is also full of people that think that Windows is "the shit". Most of this crowd hasn't even tried another OS.

When people like me say this they will even get pissed of and somehow justify it in their minds by calling me some type of radical.

I am a recent Mac convert, no I am not part of the imac crowd. I used to think that the Mac sucked on all levels. I had used DOS and Windows all the time while I was growing up so I thought that this was "the shit" and was completly content in my ignorance.

To make a long story short, I think that most people now are brainwashed zombies that haven't givin another OS a "real" try. Most people are now part of this sheepish mentality and won't give anything else a real chance.

This is why I truly hope that M$ will be broken up and maybe some of you will think for yourselfs and stop letting Bill think for you.

Yes there are a few small things that M$ has done right. But at what cost, they have bullied and stolen in just about every major product that they have released. Or they have created their own little standards or extensions, like ActiveCrap ohh sorry ActiveX.

I suppose that you might think differen'tly if you worked at one of the companies where M$ walked in one day and declared that your product was now theirs!

I don't care how successfull or how much money Bill and the boys has. What I do care about is how they got the damn money. You shouldn't be allowed to "innovate" the way M$ has by stealing the products of the truly innovative, making them into mediocre crap, then giving them away for free to put the people with original ideas out of business.

I that people at slashdot were wiser than to give this comment a 4. His points are crap. The only one thing that he has right is the point about Office. Whoopee.
