Couldn't Seagate just use newer drives for replacement when keeping old stock is too expensive? I don't think any customer would complain for getting back a newer, larger and faster drive from RMA.
Back in the Deathstar times IBM once sent me back a 40GB model for a RMA'd 30GB drive.
