Seriously, I agree with this. I'm sorta miffed that Rob even posted this so called "story". News for nerds my ass. Sheesh... he even went to a frockin' Super Bowl Party! And I don't even want to hear that crap about just doing it to see the commercials.
Any real geek would have spent the night playing the One True Sport of Kings... Q3A, fragbitch!;-) Or at least watching something more geek-friendly, like your Matrix DVD or your pirated copy of Episode One.
Please, real geeks, post here and tell everyone what you did *instead* of watching that bullshit. Even installing NT is more exciting than watching sweaty 300 pound men in tight pant run into each other. But hey, whatever floats you boat, d00d. Maybe it seems more interesting after a few beers, eh brah?
Also, someone please let us know when these commercials are available online, preferably in a format not constrained to Microsoft products.
I will take this opportunity to remind all fellow Daemons to register with Sun's Java Developer Connection and vote for the Java 2 SDK port to FreeBSD!
While there has been an official Linux port, there is no native Java 2 SDK for FreeBSD. Please, all members of JDC, go here and cast your votes to have Sun release this software. We are up to 2766 votes so far. It took 4551 votes before Sun released the Linux version, so we're almost there, right?;-)
(However, I am well aware that the release of the Linux port was due in large part to the excellent folks from Blackdown.)
Here are a few of the tons of comments on the "bug report" page where you can vote for this RFE (request for enhancement).
"FreeBSD is one of the favorite OS to run servers, and Java is becoming the favorite language to write server applications."
"Daemon News supports this project. DN will also issue a certification if it runs well on BSD."
"Due to the stability we use either Solaris or FreeBSD. It is very tiresome not being able to develop on FreeBSD for deployment on Solaris. Using solely Linux is not an option for me."
"It's a pity that we can't develop on a OS that is very popular among small ISPs."
"As has been said, not having Java ports for these platforms helps only Microsoft, and hurts the people Sun really seems interested in helping: the Open Source community."
"With official support of Java2 on FreeBSD from SUN, I would be able to finally abandon NT platform and use my prefferd FreeBSD OS for most of my projects."
You must be registered in the JDC (Java Developer Connection) to vote. Registration is free and quick, so if you're a Java developer or just have a general interest on FreeBSD or Java, please go sign up and vote!
I'm sure many UNIX and Linux users have seen the BSOD xscreensaver. Is it time to update it with a pic of the crash screen from NSA-OS?
It probably looks something like this:
This crash sceen does not exist. You never saw it. NSA OS runs flawlessly and anyone who says less is a Communist and Enemy of the State. Back away from the terminal and alert your supervisor!
PS - The Zealot Handbook is actually now distributed on CD-ROM, which makes masturbating while reading much easier, since you can easily scan pr0n sites at the same time.
I saw one of the funniest things I've seen in a while at a local mall (White Flint, for those of you in the DC area). As you walk in the door, some videos are on the side of a marble column. I don't know what is usually on them ; mall informtion, perhaps, and I think for a short while they had some of those ISP sample terminals hooked up to it. But, as I was leaving Borders (after looking at computer books and having coffee, like usual), I noticed that every monitor now displayed...
yep. thats why BSD will remain an unheard of and hardly used OS
Unheard of? Fine with me. The people that should know about it, do. I could care less if people migrating from Win32 to Linux because they read about it on Planet Quake and want to be a "l337 h4X0r" have heard about it. Then they won't come crying to me when they can't get X working. Yeah, I know I'm an asshole. But UNIX shouldn't be dumbed down just to appeal to Windows users.
Hardly used? Ha! Yeah, you know what you're talking about. I can tell. Maybe it's hardly used by lusers like yourself, but that's what Linux is for, right? Better hurry off to click "OK" so your Red Hat install can finish!
thats also why it will be feeding off the scraps thrown from the linux table.
Yep, there's more of your sparkling insight. You go ahead and ask Linus where UNIX would be without BSD. Linux is hardly all SysV, friend. You'll notice that every time you hit "shutdown -r now" to reboot (into Windows 98, for you). We're hardly "feeding off scraps thrown from the linux table". Maybe when Linux has been around for half as long as BSD you could start making comments like that, but sorry.
its because of morons like you.
Once again, you wit astounds me! I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings, really.
You didn't even bother trying to respond to my observations. You can't deny that many are trying to market Linux as a desktop OS, and that the publicity isn't all good. It seems that every other article I read says that "Linux is not ready for the desktop". No shit, Sherlock. And Macs aren't ready for server applications. They aren't supposed to be. This whole idea that UNIX and Linux (remember Gnu's Not Unix) should be designed with the Windows luser in mind is fairly new.
BSD doesnt suck - its users do.
Should I accept that as an official statement from the Linux community as a whole? No? Than don't apply my offensive comments to the whole FreeBSD community. Yeah, bitch, the entire FreeBSD community thinks you should go fuck yourself!
I like to see it as cooperation, not competition. Because of how Open Source works, as a general rule what's good for the Penguin is good for the Daemon, and vice-versa. For example, if a company open-sources information on its graphics cards, it benefits *BSD just as much as Linux, because they're both distributed with XFree86.
And if a company decides to just distribute Linux binaries, there's still a chance that we can run them on FreeBSD with Linux binary support.
I certainly hope that you're right about increased BSD support. While widely used by educational institutions (and small ISPs, I've heard), it has not been blessed (or cursed, rather) with Linux's recent surge of publicity.
I say "cursed" because it appears that Linux has strayed from the UNIX path and is now being marketed as a "desktop OS" to Windows users. The FreeBSD team concentrates on making a better OS, not convincing Windows users to switch. I am pleased that every non-geek I've talked to that "has heard of Linux" has no idea what FreeBSD is. An elitist attitude? Damn straight.
If everyone that sees this on Slashdot signs, they'll get way over their goal of 5000 sigs. Even if you don't use Linux, this is important for Open Source; if Apple release the necessary information, we can have Quicktime for BSD, too.

I actually enjoyed that one. Nice job! Can someone moderate this up?

Thanks for providing my daily dose of humor, friend. I'm going to print that out and, ahem, "soil" it for you the next time I'm, ahem, in the mood.
I was masturbating the entire time, of course!

Ya ready?
The Infamous Blue Screen of Death, © Microsoft 1988 (approximately)!! I was positively giddy! I always love public displays of how shoddy Windows is. I made sure to tell a few techie people back at the office, but alas, they weren't quite as amused as I was.
Just thought I'd share that.

If I'm getting your reference correct, you forgot "barbara streisand" (sp?). :-)
You should be ashamed, Rob! And you pretend to support Open Source... sheesh!
