    Stick with one language all year? Why even study computer science?

    What does it matter if a potential patent is COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS? As long as it doesn't work, who cares whether it's private intellectual property?

    the USPTO works fine.

    dude, clear cases are awesome, but nothing beats the cow. i mean, how can anybody possibly pass up the chance to have A COW in your OWN BEDROOM?!?!

    okay, okay, cows in bedrooms aren't always the best (for one thing, they are hard to get rid of).

    but with every company trying to come up with some original spin on the "grey box," i think that cow cases are welcome. they bring good competition for the ugly but revolutionary new macintosh boxes or the dell "toaster" box.

    Actually, it is a fairly old TV :-(, but I still can't tell the difference. But its interesting that you bring up the point of studio transfers--considering the fact that they are trying to bring about a new standard, you'd think they would do a good job! I have been disappointed several times (at freinds houses of course...)

    I agree with you that VHS don't last forever, but I think that people will start discovering that well used DVDs won't last forever (I can point out about 5 or 6 of my older but well taken care of CDs that are destined for coaster-dom).

    I will admit, also, that for hard core fans DVD can be a boon. And I would also agree that I am not buying phantom menace until it comes with $100 bill or something--the dialogue made my stomach turn inside out!

    header note {I understand the urge to want a standard in media technology, but boycotting must be done. Withouth such frenzies to dislike corporate tools, places like slashdot would be no more than a linux HOWTO site. But on to REAL dvd criticism... }

    I believe that DVD is just one more way for corporations to install their products into your telivision, dazzling you with high quality graphics, etc. I, personally, believe that $300 or so for a player, plus the cost of DVDs is a little high.

    VHS is better than I can tell the difference between (if that makes sense), is relatively cheap, and is a standard. As long as new things like DVD keep popping into our lives, we will be forced to keep spending money to keep up with the Jones'.

    Don't let them do this! Make DVD an ultimate failure--make people who bought the players regret it. You are probably right that they will start pushing other types (like divx or whatever), but those will be equally disliked. Wait for a real media type that you think will make a difference in your entertainment hours.

    (and while your add it, fill that uncontrollable urge to boycott!)
