  1. Re:Heh, relying on IIS admins? on Microsoft Attempts to Secure IIS · · Score: 1

This is the crux of the problem facing Microsoft. How to make a powerful, feature rich product that any rosy cheeked sys-ad can, with the invocation of a few wizards, setup and run.

It's like FrontPage. Is that **good** HTML??? No! Is it easy to use? Yes! Will it be used by "web developers"? Of course. Then again FP isn't exactly causing security problems like IIS does.

Face it....two things have to happen. First, Microsoft has to fix the leaks. Even if it means making the product damned hard to set up initially. Second, some Senior VP or other has to come down to the computer room...find things lacking and then kick ass and take names because IT screwed up or slacked off.

Posted elsewhere in these threads some sage said that you don't have to LIKE it...but you do have to DO it...or at least do it right. That goes for MS and us.

  2. Re:Improve "reliability" on Windows XP To Block Use Of "Troublesome" Drivers · · Score: 1

It's the interaction between the device drivers and the OS...and it looks to me like it's a direct reflection of the interaction between MS and the vendors. Good relationships mean good driver integration...bad relationships mean problems. Folks, this is dangerous. I can remember when I didn't get along too well with my parents. I'm OH SO GLAD that they didn't make it so that my wheels fell off of my car when I was out with my date! On another side note, we pulled NT servers out because of Microsoft's tactics too. I know, it seems foolish to do that, but when it came time to upgrade, we excercised our most valuable freedom. Choice. Are you listening MS???

  3. Re:I hope it will be optional on Linus Says No To Annoying Boot Messages · · Score: 2

I just junked the graphical boot screen on NetMax because I don't like the idea of things grinding away under a pretty (or ugly) graphic. Even if I don't like the text, at least I can see what the system is doing....or what it's stuck on. If we're going to go graphical, then we need to be able to hit a key, change a config or use a LILO option to boot textually. But I think what Linus is saying is that we should be seeing boot messages that mean something, not ads for someone or chest-pounding geek speak designed to echo how much tech talk we can slap together. If you want to tell me something, tell me. Don't show me a picture nor read me the spec sheet.

  4. It should be plain text on Return Address: Arrogance, MS · · Score: 1

The default behaviour for e-mail should be plain text. Users should change it depending on their needs, but the DEFAULT should be plain text. I never know when I'll be getting it on my pager, my Palm, sitting on an *X box using a shell or on a Windows machine using Pegasus....whatever. Make it text. Code is fluff....if I want to write a letter to you, I don't enclose noise and embed pictures...those are all attachments. As usual, Microsoft could care less about anyone else using any other program. STOP MAKING MY LIFE HARDER and give me CHOICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
