  1. Re:The iPad is not that bad on iPad Owners Are 'Selfish Elites' · · Score: 1

My wife has an iPad that she got instead of a Kindle as it runs the Kindle App as well as lets her check e-mails etc when she is away. I've never used any other tablet so I may be off base on this one, but the one feature I can see is ease of use for setup. If she wants a new feature she goes to the app store (as flawed as it is, searches for it and clicks install. With a tablet, assuming it is running a Windows OS, she would need to search the web for the feature, hopefully not find something with malware, download it, remember where it was saved, go through all the prompts of the install script, delete the original install file. For the highly technical people that visit Slashdot, ya the iPad doesn't let you do what you want. But you also like tinkering with computers. the Apple products, as pricey as they are, just work. My wife also has a Macbook which in my opinion was a great purchase as it means that I don't have to keep scrubbing her Windows laptop of spyware & malware. I don't remember when the last time I had to find the correct version of a driver because something stopped working after any upgrade.

Your 80 yr old grandma doesn't need to be a mechanic to realize that she should lock the car to make sure that the valuable inside are not stolen. The car manufacturers make sure that there are locks on the car, not that you use them.

  3. Re:1password on Best Tool For Remembering Passwords? · · Score: 1

I use lastPass. It has a plugin for Firefox that will autologin, or auto enter the information for you. For $12 a year you can get a 2 part authentication that requires either a USB drive or a YubiKey for the 2nd part. You can have it auto generate the password for you, and will keep the website and information for you. So as long as you remember your master password and have a USB drive with you (I keep mine with my car keys) you can use it anywhere. Great when you use multiple computers, with different OSs.

  4. Re:Decent system on "Smart" Parking Meters Considered Dumb · · Score: 2, Informative

The great thing about setting up an account tied to your cell phone is that you call in when you arrive, and you call in when you leave so you only pay for the time you actually parked. If you don't use the cell phone account then you purchase a set amount of time, same as the old meters. Also, with the cell phone account the system will call you when you are about to run out of time. At that point you can either go back to your car, or simply add my time by selecting an option when the system phones you.
