  1. Operating System on Plug-and-Play for Automobile Embedded Systems · · Score: 1

    From their site:
The standardization of automotive operating systems is not regarded as an AUTOSAR goal but existing standards and products such as OSEK, VxWorks, Windows CE for automotive and their derivatives will be taken into consideration and used in AUTOSAR.

Adding in words like AUTOSAR interfaces, "AUTOSAR runtime environment (RTE)" and microprocessor abstraction layer, I'd say that they are taking a page out of Java's handbook.

  2. Check out the shifty guy's advisor.. on SunnComm Reconsiders Lawsuit Threat · · Score: 2, Interesting

From the article: "I don't want to be the guy that creates any kind of chilling effect on research," Jacobs [CEO SunnComm]said.

"Halderman's graduate advisor at Princeton is Ed Felten, a computer science professor who once sued the Recording Industry Association of America in a challenge to the constitutionality of the DMCA. The RIAA had threatened action under the DMCA against Felten and colleagues after they said they would publish a paper disclosing flaws in an industry security initiative. That suit was eventually dismissed. " from the CNN article on the threatened lawsuit.
I wonder how forgiving he would be if Halderman was just a regular guy posting on his web page or if his advisor was not already experienced in defending a DCMA lawsuit.

  3. Re:Ethics and wiretap on Spyware Coming Under Scrutiny · · Score: 1

In the Bill and Monica circus, someone taped a conversation with Monica about the affair. I remembered talking heads (people from the news shows) pointing out that in Maryland (where at least the caller resided) it is illegal not to inform both (or all) parties about the recording.

I am sure that the laws of other states (and countries) are different. It might be great to say "this is how it is", but I believe that the real case-law involving computer conversation has yet to be written.

I suspect, however, that a divorce case would be used to set the legal precedence.

Yes, spyware has some tricky ethics.
Not that it really applies to my situation of course, but has it been legally decided that spyware logs from a family computer is admissible in court?
How is it different from normal archives like web history lists, cookies, or logs of chat rooms(or IM).

Is it a type of log or a wire tap. I see a wire tap as intercepting communication between two devices, but what is the device, the computer or the program running on the computer.

Many chat programs have features to capture messages to an internal log. Is it legal to turn it on, without informing the other party or anyone involved in the conversations (if you are doing it to spy on a chat-addicted mate)?

  6. I love my spam filter... on The Next Step In Spam Filtering · · Score: 1

of the 100 or so messages I get every day on my home account 90% or more are caught by the spam filter my hosting company has put in place. To me it is the best feature of the $14 month web site plan I don't really use. Recently the only spam that gets through are very, very short messages with links or, web-based images. They are very hard to filter, this might do it. It will be great to make them pay for each hit, it would be like going from a resonse rate of .01% to 20-50%, even fools who would check the spam site wouldn't be able to get to it.

Web bugs need to have a unique image name (or directory or query or whatever) or else everybody behind a proxy would apprear to be the same user. We all seem to be getting the same address.
Also I noticed that the <head> tag contains a javascript file called WebTrendScript.js. For those who haven't used it WebTrends is a common web log harvester. However it is interesting that I cannot seem to download that file.

I think that the Dr Know system in the movie AI was a good example of what is to come. With it's catagory based matches with a friendly, conversational tone. Prehaps with a Aviator like the Einstien based Dr Know (but please, please not clippy!).

The real difference is that Verislim - who holds the root DNS servers will be able to "have" every unregistered domain for their advertising. And even when someone does register a new domain, a local DNS cashe may hold that Verislim address.
