TACAN air to air has existed since at least the Viet Nam war. This is basically giving position of one airplane in relation to another,using radar. encoding the echo. altidude no problem. GPS just provides reference of lat and long and all AC provide the altitude untill they crash and burn.
railroad maps, or any thing wich cannot be interrupted by a third party or the Government in cace of war. Such as INS which has been better than a meter quarter way round the world since '67.
This is an aviation system. Any mode c transponder sends altitude info air traffic control. It is no problem to add this info to gps data to other A/C.
I have always enjoyed Mr. Sterling's work. It has been a while since I read any of his SciFi. In 2035 'nix will run out of ticks. On the 12 hour special New Years shift we mused that we wouldn't be taking another one then. Personally I'll be 85 and hope to see it. Plan 9 or a 128 bit clock?
A year and a half ago I vivsited my daughter, a peace corps volunteer in Ghana West Africa. At the American Club in Accra I ran into another PCV who was trying to introduce computers to Ghana. He was trying to get donations of used i386 mothrboards and cards (to avoid most duty.) He only wanted to run Linux and establish a radio internet network. The hard wired phone lines in Ghana are not reliable outside Accra, if installed, cellphone charges are not cheap. Whe you can live in a country for seven dollars a day for food lodging transportation and clothing learning Linux on discarded hardware is a viable route.
I miss Dir Opus as well. But it is run with AREXX an Amiga REXX port. You would have to replace the REXX hooks with symbolic links and forget about MUI.
