Why not use a cronjob, that checks what you can update on your system, and mail it to you?
Then you will always know what packages you need to update.
And the update job can be done with scripts. Like someone else her wrote.
Just have a master server, or maybe two, one for each distro. And they can give out the scripts to the machines that needs them.
At least you can use that for the less "important" updates.
