As soon our school hired someone to do *administrative tasks*, the first thing he did was making friends with the people from computer classes. Which resulted in a drastic decrease of network problems;-)
The point on the whole subject is that most security setups in schools are near to worthless and teachers should be happy to have pupils who actually tel them whats wrong with the setup. I mean even the moes senior security expert can make a mistake so it's nothing to be ashamed of when someone points out to you where u have a security problem and how u can fix it. Especially not when he dared u to do it.
But sadly most often the idea of having to be better than the pupils remains in teachers had. And that is a very bad thing, especially in IT-Business. Cause it'S in the very nature of IT that whatever u learn in school (no matter how good ur teachers are) it will be to 90% out of date when u have finished school. So maybe teachers should change from teaching technical stuff to teaching methods of learning, so that they can show their pupils how they can get at the info themselves and find a learning scheme that fits most their personal needs....
First, checking the "Remember Password" box isn't the most secure to do as Leimy pointed out!
Second it's not the fault of OpenSource that u can reimplement the encription. It maybe makes it easier but you could probably do the same thing on Windoze if u have a good skill at Assembler (yes it's still good to know the Basics) and a Disassembler.
The problem u claim to have found is more of a weak algorithm and that's one of the advantages of OpenSource. You can go and look at the code and determin for urself if it's secure enough for you to use...
Heck I can't believe someones buying this. I mean Security by Obscurity doesn't work! It never has and probalby never will! With the availability of the Source of a program the authors actually can proof that there are no secret backdoors or such things in his program and if there are any security problems found they can be corrected wereas by ClosedSource Applications the only thing an programmer can do is pray that noone finds it!
I agree that in the situation such as now we don't have to fear viruses on linux. But it isn't entirely safe.
With the momentary hype of Linux more and more Windows-User will try to use linux cause it'S IN and i guess with them theyy'll bring their little joke program which are the common breeding place of trojans, worms and virii. Of course a wide spread plagze isn't likely to happen since the programs would probably only run on the users priviledges but even that may be a major loss of vital data to a firm if he works in a high office!
a simple fact to the end: As long there are humans using computer ther will always be one dumb enough to catch a virus, not matter what OS used...
Well i certainly agree, that it's goood that the knowledge isn't in the hands of only one party. But making it freely available will have it downsides too.
After all Knowledge is a double-edged weapon. You can either use it for good or for bad. Well basically it may be even the same (viewed from different positions). We will now have great ooportunities to treat illnesses we couldn't before but i guess it's just a matter of time till the first Genome based weapons will occur. At least nuclear weapons will be out of date since who wants to destroy good equipment and make whole landscapes unlivable when he can get rid of the nasty inhabitants so easy...
I have the idea of an RPG flashing through my head since my school days (u could say i'm addicted to them;). Well i haven't gotten any nearer to my goal since then but tried these and that. My programming skills have been getting better through this and so i could get my job. Maybe someday I'll finally finish my game but i guess it's still a long way towards it.
The Essence is, although u may be not able to finish ur project u can still get a lot of valuable experience and skill out of it which will allow u to advance in other areas as well. So keep coding and always remember the source is with u;)
hehe was same here...
