This doesn't actually mean prices for cd's are being lowered. What it means is resellers now have the right to have "sales" on cd's. It may take a while for consumers to benefit from price wars if all the resellers decide to keep prices high. Second thing that could happen is this could be good for large resellers but small business owners may suffer if they can't afford to match the prices of larger resellers who buy bigger quantities and have less overhead. It is potentially good for the customers but perhaps bad for small business
I think we are already at a definite turning point. Most of it is brought about by greed. at first the web was a wonderful place, a free speech playground. Now that E-Commerce has come to the web or freedom of speech is deteriorating. For instance NBC is threatening 2600 with a lawsuit for owning the Domain fucknbc.com because of trademark infringement. I doubt anyone has gone to this site thinking it was NBC. Clearly these companies will try to regulate the net more and more in hopes to "protect their companies" And of course the previously mentioned Mattel, DeCSS, etc. second point is now the government will see companies making money tax free so it will have to find a way to take it's share, like it or not, it's coming. Also france no longer allows anonymous web pages, what countries are next. Great FireWall of USA??? Maybe it's time we find a way to deal with these issues. obviously we can't kick ecommerce off the net, 2 wrongs don't make a right, and most companies aren't jerks like the above mentioned. So how do we keep them from ruining it for everone without dropping to their level. I seriously think we need to address this before it snowballs into something no one can control. I hate watching our freedom of speech float away. It scares me to think my childern my someday just see the web as a virtual mall and not the biggest collection of ideas, facts, opinions and information ever invented.
It seems like both AMD and Intel Have released more high speed chips in less time than ever. I've only had my Athlon 650 for 4 months and it's already becoming outdated. I remember when the PII 450 was out it was the king of speed for almost 6 months before another chip was released. It seems like chip speed is exceeding so quickly, 1. programers will never be able to keep up. how long will it take before software is made to utilize the features of these faster processes. 2. consumers can't keep up. we go by the fastest chip thinking it will last, a week later speed doubles(exagerated but you get the idea). you can't get the new fastest chip because you have already spent all your money on the previous chip. 3. now that we are getting into speeds of 800mhz up how much difference will we really see in 50 or 100 more mhz. it was huge in the day of the 150's and 200's ( when was that, last year:) ) but now that's just not enough to notice.
