Microsoft Word automatically converts the apostrophe into their own code-page smart quote, originally to make things incompatible. You can tell who writes stuff in Word and pastes it. I don't understand why, but a whole lot of people do this.. You wouldn't believe how many times I've had to manually fix people making lists in word, pasting them into SQL directly, which crashes the application (rightfully assuming) the data to be ascii..
a) databases by nature are suppose to handle 1000s of entires no problem. a 2.8MB database should be cake to search through; the code behind it shouldn't care how many entries are in the database or that it would take a bit longer than normal to find what it's looking for.
The ONLY thing I will "fault" Apple on in this case is not limits-checking. It should reject new entries or throw an error when the table-size is exceeeded. But the rest of it is simply the fault of a web-developer that didn't know how to code THEIR side. Clearly, shoving 2.8 MB of "link data" to a mobile device is OBSCENELY bad-practice.

I wonder.... all these identity theft hacks all result in the same thing: "X years of free identity theft monitoring for all victims." Seems to me a company that offers such services (some even being blasted over and over by BBB and the like) could benefit a lot from these intrusions.

It depends. What if those "victims" were shot recently by police? Now it changes, "Oh that could be evidence of police brutality!" What if you're filming people running out of a burning building? Wouldn't YOU like to see YOUR relatives getting out, rather than wondering if they did? What if they are recording medical malpractice on YOUR daughter being handled, wouldn't you rather see/know that than only here "There's nothing we could have done"?
Generally, when there is a ton of injuries, it is a natural disaster or an act of man, either way it is better documented by civilians. This law is basically to create an elite media, call it a "Ministry of Truth", which is only allowed to do first-responding documentation.
