  1. Linux game console on E3: Linux Still Waiting In The Wings · · Score: 1

Wow.. imagine that.. a linux game console!
Lemme think what I would like to see in a machine like that.

#1 An intel processor. (Hey.. I know there are better options... but I have invested tons of time learning intel :)

#2 A powerful 3D accelerator. Perhaps an Nvidia card or 3dfx (cheaper and better support right now)

#3 A nice soundcard with 3d audio features.. perhaps one that supports OpenAL like the Creative Live.

#4 A little bit of harddrive space.. don't need too much for games

Wait a minute... I could go and build one of these right now! A Celeron setup would be pretty cheap! Now about configuring Linux... having a special Game Distribution might be what we need. Would be alot easier if the hardware specs for the game-linux were standardized. Wouldn't need alot of the extra networking features,
Just the drivers.. accelerated X and an optional dev setup.

So whos to stop the community from designing their own console? Build a special stripped down distro. If you have the supported hardware Quake3 works right out of the box! Wow!

Hrmm.. as it stands now I have to try and figure out why Xfree4 bombs out when I try to load the Nvidia GLX module with the funky Kernal Driver that took me forever to get built. Oh well

  2. Pretty Colors on Apple Possibly Pursuing Another iMac-look Clone · · Score: 1

Hrmm.. now SGI needs to sue apple for making brightly colored computer cases.

  3. New Laws are BAD on On DDoS, SPAM, Telemarketing And Harrasment? · · Score: 1

We son't need MORE laws.. there are way too many as it is.
What we DO need is a way for the average person to avoid such annoyances. This is something the phone company should take care of.

  4. Re:Do your own homework! on Information On Cryptography And Effects On Society? · · Score: 1

Hrmm... maybe he is doing his homework?

Seems like slashdot might be a just as valid source of information as say the library.

Maybe someone will post the names of a few good books. Maybe someone will point him in the right direction.

MAYBE someone who happens to have a lawsuit against them over some criptography issues would give a firsthand account of their experiences! Who the hell knows.

Just because you had to walk uphill both ways to school (in the snow even) doesn't mean that kids shouldn't ride the bus!

    Common man.. times change

  5. Kill Patents on US to Give Web Patents More Scrutiny · · Score: 2

I wonder... how would our economic system fair if we somehow abolished patents entirely?

Would the technology industry be stifled because noone would want to invest the time and money into research? Or would companies work together to research mutually beneficial technology?

    Just a thought..

  6. We need drivers as much as games at the moment. on BioWare Porting to Linux? · · Score: 1

Seems to me that the big holdup is the lack of good drivers for high end graphics. (NVIDIA?)

What are the chances that the average pc is going to have the magic combination of hardware they need to get hardware 3d in linux?

You either have to be pretty savvy with pc hardware or damn lucky to be able to play games in linux right now. (3d ones anyway)

  7. Distribution of information on The Dark Side Of Napster · · Score: 1

It's obvious that the problem is a little broader than just music. The whole concept of publishing as we know it is going to be obsolete VERY soon.

In the past, the spread of information was tied to having the resources to distribute it. The power was all in the hands of the people with enough money to press a million newspapers, distribute records or cds, print magazines or whatever. Now since the information is getting easier and easier to spread it is not about the money and resources but the information itself!

The publishing industry as a whole needs to take a good look around at whats going on and rethink their entire business model. You don't NEED tons of cash to move the information anymore so in essence you don't NEED publishers! What's happening to the music industry should be a wakeup call to anyone else in the publishing industry and they need to take action now.

I'm not talking about any kind of ethics here. This is what is happening/going to happen. People need to get over it already and adapt.

Seems to me that the future is going to be in marketing this information instead of printing it.
A huge chunk of our economy is going to get turned up on its end, perhaps its time for a flat "information tax" based on your bandwidth capabilities and split this money up between the content generators based on how many people access this.

Imagine... a sixth grade student writes an amazing piece of fiction, pgp signs it and sticks it up on his website and starts pulling in a small income. Whatever the solution something needs to be done NOW or things are just going to get worse.

  8. distributed file sharing on Open Source Napster: Gnutella · · Score: 3

After first hearing of Napster I was quite impressed with the idea but a little confused as to why its mp3 only. If the gnullsoft version allows other types of files we are going to need some kind of quality control system in order for it to be useable. You could have groups that catalog certain archives.. provide crc's and such. so that you can look up what files you are looking for in a database and search other users machines for them.. and not have to worry about getting poor quality data.
