The Knoppix Remastering howto page is here. The howto walks you through building your own customized, Knoppix-based distribution and also has a link to a page about customizing the Knoppix kernel itself. I also recommend an O'Reilly article that gives another overview of the remastering process.
I quote from the press release: "Discreet, a division of Autodesk, Inc., today announced that it plans to release a powerful subset of its industry-leading 3d studio max authoring tool to game players for no charge on the web." (emphasis added) The full press release (in PDF format) is here.
It won't be the full 3DS Max, but we'll have to wait to find out exactly what features are included in the release. However, since gMAX will be open-source, it's likely that the initial feature set won't be the final one.
MilkShape disables the save functions after thirty days if it's not registered. It is fairly inexpensive, though, at US$20, and is supposed to be pretty good for making models for Quake-type games. I think MilkShape may have started out as freeware some time in the distant past...
