There have been quite a few news reports about LENR lately. There seems to be a revival in legitimate scientific research into this area. University of Missouri is running a 5.5 million USD research project, and scientists at other institutes like Purdue, Illinois-UIUC, NASA, MIT, SRI, NRL are all looking into it.
A couple of days ago the Nuclear Energy Institute was talking about it on their facebook page and the American Nuclear Society posted a similar story on their "nuclear cafe".
The University of Missouri will host a cold fusion conference in July this year and George Miley from Illinois (UIUC) will discuss his research results in a talk at the upcoming "Nuclear & Emerging Technologies for Space (NETS-2013) organized by the ANS starting coming Monday. well it was reproduced, by Toyota and Osaka University. And it is repeatable. So not an artifact. Whether it will scale and whether other "host" materials can be used needs to be answered. If they could throw $120M at that question they would certainly find the answer.

Ames lab knows how to perform low energy nuclear transmutations.
There was a presentation at CERN last year showing that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries got positive results of transmuting Cs into Pr (Praseodymium is a rare earth element). Recently Hitach has reproduced these results.
"advanced batteries" and "alloy formulations" sound good enough to dedicate some of the money to LENR related research.
Eating those crops _might_ not pose a health risk, you might not die from it. This can be and will be proven again and again, but that's not the issue.
Allowing a company like Monsanto muscle itself into the world food business by IP protected crops, that's the real illness that we must protect ourselves from.

If you could pipe the brine waste of a desalination plant to the osmotic plant the osmotic pressure would be higher, thus more energy could be produced.
However a desalination plant will not likely be in the same location as a osmotic plant. You would need a brine pipe line to hook them up.
