He received a first class honors degree in Chemistry (University of London) followed by a PhD in plant biochemistry (UCL, London) in 1980. Following postdoctoral research at UCL, he joined one of the very first plant biotechnology companies, Cetus Madison Corp (subsequently Agracetus, Inc.) Madison Wisconsin, USA. He led a research group which achieved the first genetically transformed staple crop (soybean). Subsequently his team developed a variety-independent gene transfer method for rice. These two achievements had a significant impact, as the first transgenic soybean on the US and global markets sold by Monsanto was a direct output of his group’s research efforts.
I think the author of the story hasn't completely understood. The phenomenon exists, that's quite clear.
Robert Duncan, Vice Chancellor for Research University of Missouri: "There have been great advances in this discipline over the last five years by research labs and private institutions around the world, and this work will be explored at ICCF-18. The Naval Research Lab (NRL), and many other excellent laboratories have confirmed that the excess heat effects reported by Fleischmann and Pons are real, and roughly one thousand times larger than can be attributed to a chemical process." http://iccf18.research.missouri.edu/welcome.php
Dennis Bushnell, NASA: "The current situation is that we now have over two decades of hundreds of experiments worldwide indicating heat and transmutations with minimal radiation and low energy input. By any rational measure, this evidence indicates something real is occurring. So, is LENR "Real?" Evidently, from the now long standing and diverse experimental evidence. And, yes - with effects occurring from using diverse materials, methods of energy addition etc. This is far from a "Narrow Band" set of physical phenomena. " http://futureinnovation.larc.nasa.gov/view/articles/futurism/bushnell/low-energy-nuclear-reactions.html
President of the Italian National Agency For Energy (ENEA): "In other words, two government programs – carried out in close interaction and with check of results – have proved the existence of this phenomenon in terms that are not ascribable to a chemical process." http://old.enea.it/produzione_scientifica/volumi/V2008_16_ColdFusion.html (foreword of the book)
As mentioned above it was also presented at the American Nuclear Society's winter meeting in Nov 2012:
"Replication experiments have been performed in some universities or institutes mainly in Japan. T.Higashiyama et al. of Osaka University observed transmutation of Cs into Pr in 2003[7]. H.Yamada et al. performed similar experiments using Cs and detected increase of mass number 137 by TOF-SIMS. They used a couple of nano-structured Pd multilayer thin film and observed the increase of mass number 141 (corresponding to Pr) only when 133Cs was given on the Pd sample [8]. N. Takhashi et al., the researchers of Toyota Central R&D Labs, presented that they detected Pr from the permeated Pd sample using SOR x-ray at Spring-8 and the detected Pr was confirmed by ICP-MS and TOF-SIMS [8]." http://newenergytimes.com/v2/conferences/2012/ANS2012W/2012Iwamura-ANS-LENR-Paper.pdf
There have been quite a few news reports about LENR lately. There seems to be a revival in legitimate scientific research into this area. University of Missouri is running a 5.5 million USD research project, and scientists at other institutes like Purdue, Illinois-UIUC, NASA, MIT, SRI, NRL are all looking into it.
A couple of days ago the Nuclear Energy Institute was talking about it on their facebook page and the American Nuclear Society posted a similar story on their "nuclear cafe".
The University of Missouri will host a cold fusion conference in July this year and George Miley from Illinois (UIUC) will discuss his research results in a talk at the upcoming "Nuclear & Emerging Technologies for Space (NETS-2013) organized by the ANS starting coming Monday. (http://iccf18.research.missouri.edu/)
On a ANS meeting in November 2012 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries reported about their transmutation experiment and successful replications of the experiment at Toyota lab.
thanks.
I hope that you feel that reading this was a waste of your time when I tell you that this topic is also known as Low energy nuclear reactions, which after a short google you will find out is a synonym for cold fusion.
After all most people will tell you that cold fusion is crackpot, right ? That is can be dismissed without review.
Very interesting topic, I can tell you.
University of Missouri will be hosting the ICCF-18 conference in July, together with Purdue University.

well it was reproduced, by Toyota and Osaka University. And it is repeatable. So not an artifact. Whether it will scale and whether other "host" materials can be used needs to be answered. If they could throw $120M at that question they would certainly find the answer.
I am happy that you find this interesting, I wish more people would know about it. This is slashdot, stuff that matters, but nobody knows about it and I can tell why that is so.
This topic is also known as Low energy nuclear reactions, if you google that you'll find that it is also known as cold fusion. Now everybody _knows_ cold fusion is crackpot and can be dismissed without review.
Yet, many reliable labs have presented compelling evidence that something anomalous is definitely going on.

I am talking about a different technology to produce the transmutations, no accelerator needed. You might find the links I provided very interesting to read.

Ames lab knows how to perform low energy nuclear transmutations.
There was a presentation at CERN last year showing that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries got positive results of transmuting Cs into Pr (Praseodymium is a rare earth element). Recently Hitach has reproduced these results.
"advanced batteries" and "alloy formulations" sound good enough to dedicate some of the money to LENR related research.
Eating those crops _might_ not pose a health risk, you might not die from it. This can be and will be proven again and again, but that's not the issue.
Allowing a company like Monsanto muscle itself into the world food business by IP protected crops, that's the real illness that we must protect ourselves from.
There is so much evidence that Monsanto is a dirty company, anyone who eats there GM stuff must be a Microsoft fan boy.
This Mr. Jones is on the scientific advisory board of Mendel Biotech, which states on their own web page: "Mendel's most important customer and collaborator for our technology business is Monsanto".
If you could pipe the brine waste of a desalination plant to the osmotic plant the osmotic pressure would be higher, thus more energy could be produced.
However a desalination plant will not likely be in the same location as a osmotic plant. You would need a brine pipe line to hook them up.

to be able to understand how confused you are start with reading this peer reviewed paper from 2002: http://lenr-canr.org/acrobat/IwamuraYelementalaa.pdf
better stop using "cold fusion" as an example for crackpot science.
spot on.
Imagine what the scientific establishment would have said back in 1912, had Alfred Wegener proposed this then.
remember this song ?
