  1. Re:Roberto! on Robot With Knives Used In Robotics Injury Study · · Score: 2, Informative

Except that's stupid, because a robot handling a knife will be handling a knife because it will be, duh, cutting stuff. They use force pressure measurements on the robot to determine if there is resistance, and, if there is, the robot stops cutting. The obvious problem with this is the robot will be encountering resistance if it's cutting stuff it should be cutting.

A useful "don't cut humans" test would be something that distinguishes a human from, say, the side of pork I WANT my robot to cut up.

Seriously, if I get a robot to help me cube meat in the kitchen, and it stops cutting every time it encounters resistance, I'm gonna beat whoever sold it to me to death with the robot arm.

  2. Woah... on Why the FBI Director Doesn't Bank Online · · Score: 2, Funny

Robert Mueller's the guy I keep getting emails from asking me to accept some money from Nigeria. He's always claimed to be the head of the FBI, but I never believed him. Man, all this time I've been risking arrest and denying myself several hundred thousand US dollars just because I thought it was a scam! I guess you shouldn't be skeptical of everything you get in your inbox.

  3. Re:hunter2 on Nielsen Recommends Not Masking Passwords · · Score: 1

Apple does allow you to hide or reveal your password for the wireless network, which is funny because this option is a bit more of a risk than just letting you see your password while entering it. By allowing you to reveal the password after it's been entered, they're allowing anyone to walk up to a Mac that's connected and see the wireless password when the user is away.

Yeah! And, if you leave your Mac unattended, anyone can just walk up and steal it. Or install a virus. Or a number of things. At that point, it's just computational Darwinism. Don't be stupid and your computer will be fine.

  4. Radical Political Transformation on Why Our "Amazing" Science Fiction Future Fizzled · · Score: 1

"Americans have never accepted a radical political transformation that would change their future." Umm... Revolutionary War? Declaration of Independence? Constitution? The South leaving just before the Civil War? The Civil War? Emancipation Proclamation? Manifest Destiny? Women's suffrage? Civil Rights movement? The current battle for gay marriage? Any of these ringing any bells?

  5. Simpsons on Voting Machines and 'Calibration Drift' · · Score: 1

Anyone see the last election episode of the Simpsons. "6 votes McCain." "Hey, I only wanted one of those votes to be for McCain!"

  6. The reason why religious people want to live more on Study Finds the Pious Fight Death Hardest · · Score: 1

We're looking at this the wrong way. People who are highly religious don't want to avoid death because of some doctrine or belief, but people who are scared of death are more likely to be highly religious.
