I suppose I shouldn't reply to such a dickweed troll but take your finger out of your ass and think...
Slashdot is international. For example, I am reading this in Wales. However as my father (Polish) actually spent some time in a POW camp in Italy under the barbaric regime of the Nazi's I find your comments ignorant, abusive and offensive.
I will forward a complaint to the staff of slashdot.org in due course.
I hope you petty puerile sense of humour enjoys this - becuase I can think of 6 million people who will not.
I'm going to email BillG right now "Hey Bill, I got this great idea. How about if we make W2K such that we can load a different UI on it. I'm thinking of calling it 'W'".
or "Bill, I got this great idea. How about being able to load a printer driver without rebooting the OS".

I built my home server on the cheap, with a Cyrix 300mmx two years ago and the only problem I ever had was with a Creative Labs Blaster Exxtreme not being well supported in SVGALib. The whole server was built on cheap components.
In fact its still running today, sweet as a nut, waiting to be upgraded to a 2xpII solution.
Point is: The Cyrix was only ever meant as a cheap processor - not some quake-hot 3d graphics master
Office is a seriously big cash cow to MS. Once it is obvious that the sum of money available through sales > sum of money to port, then we'll see Office.
Hell we'd see Office on the Palm Pilot if MS thought it'd be a money spinner.
So when is evolution going to kick in and preclude humans? I think we qualify as a runaway predator... ------------------------------------------------
Good point
Note I said "tends". Mankind has evolved to the point that it is in essence outside this system. Barring a planetary catastrophe we are probably safe.
But then again, we are not technically a predator. We feed off other animals but by being diverse in our foodstuffs we do not make a species extinct (often) by eating it out of existence.
We have in essence crossed an evolutionary hill where we are so prevalent on the planet that it will take a pretty good predator to pare our numbers down.
SO if we are truly the "fittest", why am I so out of shape!
balancing the endless churning of the web against the need for a stable archive.
Unless we take steps to archive, transcribe and preserve all this information (yes, grits, petrification et al) then we are in effect building a new Library of Alexandria.
It would be the greatest loss ever for archaeologists of the future to be unable to access archives of the WWW. Every day is a unique snapshot of the world as the endless churning of webpage updates/dead link removals changes the WorldWideWeb.
This information Ocean is something unique. Archiving such a huge store of information generates a challenge in itself.
I don't often wax lyrical about the internet but it is in effect becoming a snapshot of our civilisation.
What a loss for future generations if they cannot see the views of ordinary human beings (through the endless websites) preserved.
Nice one! I'll argue your description on several counts (grin)
1) Lousy - Nope, just been de-flea'ed 2) LInux-using - only as a server - Still using WIn98 as a client as I haven't found an app that reads WordPro Millenium files 3) Welsh Nationalist - well done, you spotted Plaid Cymru. Yes I hapen to believe in the rights of small nations to govern their own affairs! 4) Scum - Nah, scum is useful. See the story about generating hydrogen fuel with algae.
The USA burns it to the tune of almost 20 trillion (that is 2 times ten to the thirteenth power) cubic feet every year (see this USDOE page for my source). Europe imports a great deal of it from Russia. Exactly what did you mean by "wasn't used so much"?"
Talking about a local perspective - I wonder why it isn't so well used in Wales. I know Wind/SOlar and tidal are used a lot, but we hear a lot of talk about biomass/methane with little action on it.
There was a lot of talk about putting smaller biomass generator's in my local community as top-up power but little was done about it.
My guess - its another of those UK-USA differences we love to talk about;-)
"Oh, are you laboring under the delusion that there is no natural gas industry because of greenhouse-warming issues? Think again"
No.
When I said "I think its the greenhouse risk that is holding back mass use of methane" I meant just that. I didn't know particularly why it wasnt used so much. I know here in Wales biomass energy production is hardly seen. We have quite a lot of Wind Turbines for example.
I know there are lots of issues with methane production - it is the worst greenhouse gas for example, much worse then co2. SO I made a guess.
Honest!
I am aware that greenhouse issues haven't stopped people before but think of it. If they don't want a technology in place that could seriously undercut them, then play to the easiest card. And in methane's case its the fact it is such a bad greenhouse gas and global warming/cooling is such a big issue
When you buy a newspaper you know that you will not be getting a totally unbiased view of the news - each paper has its political standpoints, views and biases.
Web based news allows quick and easy correlation, and that means you can easily see more sides to the story. A great example of this is www.newsnow.co.uk which is great to get a themed view of the world.
Yes newspapers will survive, but I think sites such as NewsNow allow you to see how different factions report the same news.
Actually it takes a phenomenally long time for Hydrogen to escape - almost forever in that it would be quickly re-absorbed into the ecosystem.
And even if it did escape into the wild, it splits water as part of it's natural chemistry. It would use up its "food" way before it could even make a dent in the water level. Plus it would also be open to predators.
Evolution tends to preclude runaway predators as they use up their own food supplies long before they can have a real impact on their environment
The big problem with Methane of course is that it is one of the worst greenhouse gases.
The advantage of H2 is that even if you took the most inefficient way of using it as a fuel - burning it - the byproduct is totally harmless and recyclable.
I think its the greenhouse risk that is holding back mass use of methane.
Its strange to see the anti-M$ rants when it wasn't that long ago it was IBM that was the hated dark one..... (Must I add I ain't a big fan of m$ but I don't bash blindly). M$ was once the company that was the pioneer (even if it's "pioneering" was buying in and rewriting!). A week is a long time in politics, but 10 years is an eternity in IT.
Remember also that although M$ aren't exactly the nicest competitors - the people who work there are largely just Joe Schmoe's who need to pay their bills like all of us.
Apple are similarly pilliored for being the Good Guy (standing up to M$, doing their own thing) while similarly being the Bad Guy (closed license hard/soft ware, doing their own thing!).
It seems the IT industry is littered with good intentions that become the next Empire - or worse, fall by the wayside. Remember OS/2 was originally OS/2 NT? Amiga's? NeXT? CP/M 86/68k ();-)
Linux has proved its longevity - now lets prove our ability to co-exist (as users).
Not that I am drawing a parallel here or anything;-)

I know plenty of women in IT who suffer discrimination simply because of their chromosone's.
I try my best to treat everyone equally - and in fact if you read my post you will see that I was trying (not very well, it seems. Sorry) to say that we should look at the reasons why. If it is statistical and women simply don't prefer IT - then fine.
But I know one female VB developer who gets some serious peer pressure simply because of her gender.
Even though she is one damn fine coder, and has been doing it for years!
I was arguing that we should ensure that people have choice - not pigeonhole them.

Oh for god sakes grow up people.
Look at it this way. The way mankinds population is expanding - it won't be long before we need to look at the planets.
Bitter biologist indeed - more like another luddite who thinks that life would be hunky-dory if we all live in a bloody cave again.
Welcome to the march of progress - if you don't like it tough, its called evolution.
What would mr bloody bitter biologist say if we found life on Europa huh? All of a sudden mr bitter biologist would have something to study.
Sheesh - for "news for nerds" we haven't have got some people stuck in the 17th century
No come on people, we can make money from this.
