  2. Re:BOO HISS! on Nvidia Releases Beta XFree86 4.0 Drivers · · Score: 1

From what I've heard about it, XFree86 4.0 server binaries work on all operating systems written for the same architecture so the Linux binary should work with *BSD. If you actually have a BSD system you might want to install it and see if it works. So if I were running NetBSD on a PPC system, this binary would work? Somehow I don't think so. note the "for the same architecture". Pfft, some people don't even bother to read a measly paragraph before getting hissy.

The Qt classes blow away those jokes offered up by MFC and make OWL look puny. From what I understand, Qt will be the GUI component of Kylix.

Wishful thinking, Kylix will be powered by Inprise's VCL. The VCL is an excellent class library that i have used first hand in Delphi and C++ Builder in windows.

  5. Pain in the rear on Ask Miguel de Icaza About Gnome · · Score: 1

Hi there, I am both a frequent linux, windows, and macintosh user and I have a few opinions you may or may not find interesting ;P

When i first got into "programming", I learned HTML. This was back when the IE/Netscape wars were actually a battle. The two browsers gained DOM's, and primitive implementations of DHTML. In order to develop with these new features, however, either two sets of pages had to be used, or a lot of if ... then's were needed. This was what originally drove me to windows and macintosh programming, because you had ONE codebase, and it looked the same on every pc 99% of the time.

Now, I got into linux programming not too long ago, but i've as of yet only produced command line programs. Why? Because of the fact that making my programs for both KDE or GNOME would require the same kind of bullshit that I put up with on IE and Netscape. I know linux users aren't into ONE DESKTOP, but for chrissake, does that mean all programmers who want to cater to everyone (read: commercial apps) need to write two programs? If you're gonna compete, atleast come up with a friggin' standard already to ease the pain of the developers!!!!!

  6. Foreshadowing the epic battle to come? =P on Can Indrema Beat Microsoft To the Punch? · · Score: 1

If this company fails to deliver, this will serve MS's advertising department to no end, I won't even go into the possible catch phrases. If they do, however, deliver in full then it could be looked at as a victory for the open source community, and illustrate linux's power, versatility, and perhaps more importantly, ability to fit into the home environment (i.e. not the server room). Will David beat goliath? Tune in tomorrow night folks!

  7. Re:Blah Blah Blah on Geographic Screening · · Score: 1

The problem is that we have an international network, and no international laws. That's precisely what we need. And if we can't get international laws on the internet, then we'll have to use national laws, and nationalize the network

You may have forgotten to account for the fact that many laws are based on cultural and national values, morals, and experience. In many countries there are less restrictions on nude photography (pornography =X), partly because they lack the puritan background (we're learning about this in English, courtesy of the Scarlet Letter). This is just one example in a broad field of them, and maybe International regulation is not the answer. These will likely only lead to conflict, just as state laws often conflict in jurisdiction with federal laws in the US. The solution, in my opinion, is toleration, and acceptance. Sure, it may never happen, but some of these corporations ought to stop running scared of the internet, embrace it, and make a killing in the process. Let's have a financial example, shall we? Technology stocks are/were hot, liberal buyers bought them. Conservative buyers argue that they could not possibly make money. Moral of the story? Should have bought tech ;P
